Liverpool-Wolverhampton, Premier League: odds, predictions

Liverpool-Wolverhampton is a Premier League Week 7 replay and is played on Wednesday at 9pm: live TV, odds, predictions

This will be the fourth clash between Liverpool and Wolverhampton in the last two months. Two teams who have got to know each other pretty well by now, having also crossed paths in the FA Cup. In the cup, two close clashes took place in January: the first one ended in a draw (2-2) and required a so-called replay, a rule that Reds coach Jurgen Klopp would abolish if he could.

In the second FA Cup match, played at Molineux, Salah and his teammates got the better of it (0-1) only to go down in the next round to De Zerbi’s Brighton. Wolves took their revenge two weeks later and they did it with interest: a 3-0 no-go defeat that adds to the list of Liverpool’s embarrassments this season. After that ugly defeat the Reds had a jolt, winning two games in a row for the first time in 2023: Everton and Newcastle were the victims. But the enthusiasm of Klopp and his men was dampened by Real Madrid in the Champions League, who inflicted one of the worst defeats in Liverpool’s history at the temple of Anfield Road, scrapping them 5-2 in the first leg of the round of 16. A humiliation could not fail to affect the players psychologically. Last weekend, in fact, they did not go beyond a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.

Fourth head-to-head in two months

In the away match at Selhurst Park, Lady Luck also turned her back on the Reds, who hit three woodwork goals. The situation becomes more complicated in the standings, where Liverpool are seventh and have to recover nine points from fourth-placed Tottenham, who, however, have two matches left. A recovery to be won at all costs, then, the one with Wolverhampton.

Who in turn will want to take advantage of this to move further away from the relegation zone, which is still too close. Julen Lopetegui’s team had a mixed performance in February: victories over Liverpool and Southampton were followed by a home defeat to Bournemouth and a draw in London against Fulham.

The Prediction

In the Premier League, the Anfield Road basin continues to be a factor: at home Liverpool have barely lost a game and, more importantly, have conceded nine goals, for what is the second best defensive performance at home in the tournament. Klopp’s team are favourites to win.

Liverpool-Wolverhampton’s likely line-up

  • LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, van Dijk, Robertson; Bajcetic, Fabinho, Henderson; Salah, Firmino, Diogo Jota.
  • WOLVERHAMPTON (4-3-3): José Sa; Semedo, Dawson, Kilman, Bueno; Ruben Neves, Lemina, Matheus Nunes; Adama Traoré, Raul Jimenez, Sarabia

POSSIBLE OUTCOME: 2-1
