La Liga: predictions on matches on Wednesday, Aug. 28

by Thorsten

Liga, Spain’s top league takes center stage with the first midweek round: Atletico Madrid sets its sights on second win in a row.

In the first midweek round of La Liga 2024-25, “Cholo” Simeone’s Atletico Madrid puts its second win of the season in its sights after a 3-0 thrashing of Girona last Sunday. Four points so far for the Colchoneros, one of the teams that has been most reinforced in the market thanks to the arrivals of Alvarez, Le Normand, Sorloth, Lenglet and Gallagher. The Madrid club has the opportunity to play again in front of its public and the newly promoted Espanyol, still at a standstill with zero points (2 defeats out of 2), cannot be scary.

The Catalans, moreover, failed to score a single goal between Real Valladolid and Real Sociedad, manifesting problems in ball possession. It would not be a surprise, then, if Atletico Madrid achieved another sweeping success, while also keeping their goal unbeaten. Those hunting for their first win, on the other hand, are Athletic Bilbao, which picked up just one point between Getafe and Barcelona. The Basque lineup, coached again by Ernesto Valverde, will have to try to restart from the decent performance offered against the Blaugrana at Montjuic, a match in which they would have deserved more. At the San Mames comes a Valencia side terrified by the double knockout against Barcelona and Celta Vigo. The roster is very young and Ruben Baraja, coach of the Bats, should be given time, but another defeat risks destabilizing the environment: match of at least three total goals, since Valencia has conceded as many as five in two games.

The predictions on the other matches

Victory within reach also for Real Sociedad, which immediately reacted after its debut defeat to Rayo Vallecano in front of its public.

Imanol’s men turned the page by routing Espanyol Stadium (0-1) and are ready to repeat with Alaves. Finally, it is difficult to single out a clear favorite in the challenge between newcomers, Real Valladolid-Leganes: the Pucelanos had debuted with a success against Espanyol, but then had to reckon with Real Madrid’s desire for redemption, losing 3-0 at the “Bernabeu”; on the other hand, the Pepineros are still undefeated, thanks in part to a favorable calendar (1-1 with Osasuna and a 2-1 victory over Las Palmas).
