Juventus-Milan, Italian Super Cup: free-to-air TV, likely lineups, prediction

by Mark

Juventus-Milan is a match valid for the semifinals of the Supercoppa Italiana and is played on Friday at 8 p.m.: odds, prediction, live free-to-air TV and streaming.

The Supercoppa Italiana is back with its new format – inspired by its Spanish “twin” competition – that debuted a year ago in faraway Saudi Arabia. No longer a single match between the winner of the Scudetto and the holder of the Coppa Italia but a sort of mini-tournament that also features the finalist of the national cup and the runner-up in the league.

At Riyadh, therefore, the challenge between two of the most emblazoned and successful clubs in Italian soccer, Juventus and Milan, will be staged. Up for grabs is a pass to the final against one between Inter and Atalanta, on the pitch 24 hours earlier in the other semifinal. Let’s start by saying that the Bianconeri and Rossoneri did not end 2024 in the best of ways, quite the contrary.

The Old Lady cannot recover from “pareggite” and last Sunday got caught up twice by Fiorentina (2-2), collecting the 11th “x” of its championship. Thiago Motta and his men, despite an overall positive and willing performance, thus failed to overtake the Viola remaining sixth in the standings and -9 from the leading pair, formed by Atalanta and Napoli. A Juve that, net of absences, gives the feeling of being in a perennial running-in phase: continuity for the moment remains a chimera and there are still too many mistakes made by individuals (see Cambiaso and Kalulu against the Gigliati). The department most in trouble is the defense: the solidity of a few months ago is a distant memory, with the Bianconeri who in the last 4 games have kept their goal unbroken only against Cagliari in the Coppa Italia.

Milan, the Conceiçao era begins in Arabia

Accordingly, Milan is experiencing a far worse moment, having just given Paulo Fonseca the boot. The Portuguese coach, who was exonerated after the disappointing draw with Roma (1-1), has been replaced by compatriot Sergio Conceiçao, who was pursued by the Rossoneri club as early as last summer. The former Porto man will make his debut on the Diavolo’s bench precisely in Riyadh against his son Francisco’s Juve.

This is a very different coach than Fonseca. His Porto was a tough, no-frills team that very often sought verticality. A “sergeant,” in short, who was also called upon to settle some locker room-level grits that only hastened the end of the previous management. Conceiçao finds an AC Milan that has had far too many ups and downs so far and that at the end of the first half of the season finds itself in eighth place in the league, now out of the Scudetto fight but far from fourth place as well. Initially, the Lusitanian coach is expected to keep the 4-2-3-1 used by his predecessor but it will certainly be interpreted differently: up front Leao, Pulisic and Morata will almost certainly find space. On the other side, however, Motta will repropose from 1′ Cambiaso and Yildiz, both of whom started from the bench against Fiorentina.

The Prediction

The season’s only previous match ended in a sleepy 0-0, punctuated by very few shots on goal. The same result, moreover, accrued last April at Allianz Stadium. Will we see more spectacle in the Super Cup? Probable, since Juventus is less solid at the back and concedes more: the Bianconeri will not give up attacking but could suffer from the counterattacks of an AC Milan likely more attentive to the defensive phase. In all likelihood, in short, both will score on at least one occasion this time.

The probable lineups of Juventus-Milan

JUVENTUS (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Kalulu, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Thuram; Yildiz, Koopmeiners, Conceição; Vlahovic.
MILAN (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Emerson Royal, Gabbia, Thiaw, Hernandez; Fofana, Reijnders; Leão, Pulisic, Chukwueze; Morata.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-1
