Italian tennis is living probably the most prosperous moment in the history of the sport. There is Jannik Sinner but not only.
In recent years Italian tennis has experienced impressive growth, growth to such an extent that it has made the racket sport the most popular sport after soccer. If anyone believes that this is all due to world number one Jannik Sinner they are wrong, or at least partly centered on the tennis player from San Candido but that is not the only reason.
Five tennis players in the Top 40, nine in the Top 100, Italy is – along with the United States – the leading nation in the Top 100 rankings and our tennis can smile. Jannik turned 23 the other day and paradoxically is almost the ‘oldest’ of a group of youngsters that also includes Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli and Luciano Darderi, as well as the more experienced Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Berrettini and many others.
Tennis Italy is in good hands, Sinner is leading the caravan and we are of course talking about the number one in the world, but with each passing week comes good news and the latest one certainly makes our fans smile. In addition to these young people already listed and on the launch pad there is a new young talent, very young in fact, who has been showing off in the last week.
Jannik Sinner already has a new heir: Italy is smiling
While the Cincinnati Masters 1000 is still being played (the final of the tournament will be played tonight) last week the Challenger of Todi, category 75, was staged, where rather backward ranked tennis players showed off. Nothing strange, Challengers are minor tournaments and it happens every week, but in this tournament the young 2007 class Pierluigi Basile also participated: this is the first 2007 class to qualify in an Atp Challenger with this formula and the Italian also won a match.
A historic result for Italy and thus showing another young talent on the ramp, a very young man who has great desire to prove his numbers. Basile lost in the second round to the Spaniard Taberner, who is more experienced and in the top 300 in the world, but even there the boy showed the makings of a champion and made it clear once again to everyone that Italy is in good hands. For Sinner and beyond, great young talent continues to be born.
