Germany-Denmark, Julian Nagelsmann’s Mannschaft will have to contend with the hostile Danes. Here’s who could decide the challenge.
The second Euro 2024 round of 16 is scheduled to take place at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, where hosts Germany and Denmark will compete. The not particularly inspiring performance offered last Sunday against Switzerland on the third day of the group stage has not dissipated the enthusiasm around Julian Nagelsmann’s Mannschaft, which was able to secure qualification to the knockout stage with one round to spare thanks to two clear victories against Scotland (5-1) and Hungary (2-0).
In the Frankfurt showdown with the Red Swiss, Neuer and his teammates were less incisive than usual, perhaps due to the fact that they felt they already had qualification in the bag. And they risked not winning the grouping and being overtaken by Murat Yakin’s men, who were pegged back in the dying minutes by a goal from Fullkrug. Had Germany finished second, however, it would not have been a disaster. Despite finishing ahead of everyone in Group A, the Mannschaft found itself in the part of the scoreboard where almost all the strongest are, starting with Spain and ending with France (only England is missing). The one with Denmark will inevitably be another litmus test for a selection that occasionally tends to go astray. The Scandinavians will have nothing to lose and will rely on their solidity. In Group C, which finished in second place behind the British, they had three draws, which was enough to put Slovenia and Serbia behind them.
Germany-Denmark, Musiala’s quality is indispensable
Germany’s brightest star is class of 2003 Jamal Musiala, top scorer along with Fullkrug (2 goals for both). The young Bayern Munich fantasist failed to swell the net against Switzerland but was nevertheless one of the most dangerous.
His quality will be indispensable to unhinge Denmark’s defense, which is why we are betting on him as a possible scorer in the Dortmund challenge.

In Denmark the most likely to be shot-stoppers are the more offensive players: the two forwards Hojlund and Wind and the trequartista Eriksen, who can hurt from set pieces. From the flanks, however, both Germany’s Mittelstadt and Denmark’s Maehle could make themselves dangerous. Chapter cautions: risk Schlotterbeck, who is called upon not to miss the disqualified Tah, but among the “baddest” could also end up being Danish Delaney.
