Everton-Wolverhampton, Premier League: odds, predictions

by Michael

Everton-Wolverhampton is a match valid for the 17th day of the Premier League and is played on Monday at 4pm: predictions, TV, streaming.

Tension continues to cut into Everton. Rumours of Frank Lampard’s possible sacking have been circulating non-stop and during the World Cup break the name of Marcelo Bielsa as a possible replacement for the Englishman has come up several times.

The first part of the season had not ended in a positive way for the former Chelsea captain and coach, who was defeated twice in a row by Leicester and Bournemouth. Particularly heavy was the loss on the last day at the home of the Cherries, who thrashed the Toffees 3-0, who are now fourth-last in the table and just one point ahead of the relegation zone. Lampard’s main mitigating factor is injuries, which have never ceased to plague the Liverpool club. Garner and Holgate will be out for several more months, while the date of striker Calvert-Lewin’s return is still uncertain: his absence has been felt a lot in Everton’s offensive department, one of the least prolific teams in the Premier League with only 11 goals scored.

Two wins out of two in the friendlies played by the Toffees in recent weeks, but little significance given the value of the opponents. First the success on penalties against Celtic, then the 5-1 goleada against the Australians of Western Sydney.

The Boxing Day match against Wolverhampton, at the bottom of the Premier League standings, takes on the contours of a salvation clash. In their first fifteen games Wolves have done even worse than Everton, scraping together barely 10 points and scoring the pittance of eight goals. After having given the sack to the Portuguese coach Lage, the black and gold team will start again with the former Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui, called to ‘revive’ a team that does not lack talent but is unable to unblock itself from an offensive point of view.

The Prediction

Reversing the negative trend is the main objective of these two teams built for more ambitious goals than a simple salvation. Wolves’ incredible goal drought seems to be over, at least judging by the results of their three friendlies, in which they have always scored. Lopetegui might be able to reverse the trend right away and that is why we believe Wolverhampton can score at least one goal in this salvation challenge with Everton. A draw is not to be ruled out at Goodison Park.

Everton-Wolverhampton’s likely line-up

  • WOLVERHAMPTON (4-2-3-1): José Sa; Semedo, Collins, Kilman, Bueno; Ruben Neves, Moutinho; A. Traoré, Podence, Gonçalo Guedes; Jimenez.
