Everton-Liverpool is a match valid for the sixth day of the Premier League and is played on Saturday at 13:30
The sixth day of the Premier League kicks off with a highlight – Everton-Liverpool, the infamous Merseyside derby, scheduled for lunchtime. It will be played at Goodison Park, the home of Frank Lampard’s Toffees, where the Reds went through last season with derisory ease, conquering their city rivals’ stadium with a 4-1 victory. Thus redeeming the defeat suffered a year earlier, which remains Everton’s only one in the last twelve years. With Carlo Ancelotti on the bench, in fact, it seemed that the historic gap between the two teams could somehow be bridged. And during the annus horribilis of Jurgen Klopp’s men (2021-21 season), the Toffees took a number of pleasures.
Now the hierarchies have been re-established, although momentarily Liverpool only have three points more than Everton after five league rounds. The reason lies in the false start of Salah and his team-mates, who have picked up only two points in the first three matches, due to a long series of injuries and disqualifications. The defeat at Old Trafford rang a kind of alarm bell and last Saturday came the first victory. And what a victory it was: 9-0 at newly-promoted Bournemouth. It was decidedly more complicated, however, to get the better of Newcastle, close to a resounding success at Anfield Road in the midweek round: the Reds were forced into a comeback, completed in the eighth minute of added time thanks to the seal of new signing Fabio Carvalho, taken from Fulham.
Liverpool have seven points to make up against Arsenal, but can already count on the second best attack (15 goals). The same cannot be said of the defence, always perforated with the exception of the challenge against Bournemouth. Everton are also far from solid at the back and perhaps that is also the reason why Lampard’s men are still winless. After defeats to Chelsea and Aston Villa, the Toffees have drawn three in a row against Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Leeds.
The Prediction
Derby that shouldn’t hold any surprises as far as the result is concerned: Reds widely favoured for the three points in the derby. At the same time, the goal option is advisable. Liverpool’s defence has looked inordinately fragile in the first few days of the season and it is not out of the question that Everton could break through on at least one occasion.
