Europa League, Sweden’s Elfsborg and Poland’s Wisla Krakow now have qualification in their grasp: news and predictions.
There is only room for six teams in the second preliminary round of the 2024-25 Europa League. One of them will most likely be Wisla Krakow, which took advantage of the home factor in the first leg and smashed two goals off the Llapi Kosovars, now forced into a very difficult comeback. The 2-0 win in Poland puts the Balkans’ backs to the wall: they will have to win by at least three goals in the return match in Kosovo to advance to the round.
A situation that will force the Llapi to dare, while Wisla can afford to wait for the opponent and strike on the counterattack: both should score at least one goal. Qualification is also a step away for the Swedes of Elfsborg, who had no problem seven days ago against the Cypriots of Paksi, who were felled with a resounding 3-0 win. It is almost impossible for the men led by Spanish coach Carcedo to turn it all around in Cyprus, but this time at least one goal should be scored in a match of more than 2 total goals. Goals are also in sight in Tobol-Ruzomberok: the Slovaks mortgaged qualification in front of their home crowd, winning with a pyrotechnic 5-2, and an eventful challenge also looms in remote Kazakhstan.
The predictions on the other matches
A week ago Sheriff Tiraspol fell to a surprise defeat against Azerbaijan’s Zira, privateers in Transnistria thanks to Volkov’s goal. A 1-0 win is an overturnable result, especially for a team on paper as better equipped as Sheriff, but for Yury Gura’s men it will be no cakewalk to complete the comeback.
The other result that left everyone speechless last Thursday was the very heavy 4-0 inflicted on Paksi by Corvinul Hunedoara, a team that plays in the second tier of the Romanian football system and achieved a resounding feat last season by going on to win the national cup. Confidence can again be placed in the Romanians, who appeared more on the ball than the Hungarians. Finally, Maribor, defeated 2-1 in the first leg by the Bulgarians of Botev Plovdiv, can also do it: the return of Ilicic, back from the European Championship with his Slovenia, will be crucial for the yellowviola.
