Euro 2024, the tournament’s best youngster is at 8

Euro 2024, Spain’s Pedri will try to “defend” the award won three years ago but the competition is definitely fierce.

Three years ago, in the “traveling” edition of the European Championship won by Italy, UEFA had very few doubts. His resounding performances, after all, put just about everyone in agreement. Although he had not even turned 18, the young Barcelona midfielder Pedri, launched by then Spain coach Luis Enrique, was one of the revelations of the tournament.

The Roja starlet shone especially in the semifinal with Italy, which saw the Azzurri triumph on penalties after a very balanced match. Sixty-five successful passes out of 66 in 120 minutes for what today has become a staple of the blaugrana, yet another champion coming out of the Catalan club’s famous “cantera,” notoriously a “bottomless pit” when it comes to churning out talent. Pedri was unquestionably one of the protagonists of that edition of the continental review, although before then he had barely collected four appearances with the senior national team. Will the Canary Islands native be able to retain the scepter of best youngster of the tournament at Euro ’24 as well? Yes, because among the papables, since his age allows him to do so-he is still 21 years old. Compared to three years ago, however, the competition is definitely more numerous. And an encore is not a given.

Euro 2024, shine the stars of Musiala and Yamal?

The big favorite, in the edition that is now at the starting ribbons, can only be Jude Bellingham, just back from a fabulous season with Real Madrid, in which he scored – playing practically as an advanced midfielder – more than 20 goals between La Liga and the Champions League. A true phenomenon.

Everybody expects him to make a difference with his selection, England, as well: expectations are very high, but it should not be forgotten that in recent months with the Blancos he has been a bit eclipsed, at least in terms of the scoring phase (but not only). On the other hand, the one who could use the European Championship to take the stage once and for all is Jamal Musiala, quoted at 8.00 on Goldbet. Along with Florian Wirtz, another one to keep an eye on, the 2003 class from Bayern Munich (10 goals and 6 assists in the last Bundesliga) represents one of the great hopes of host Germany. Musiala has not excelled in continuity in recent months, but Julian Nagelsmann’s “fluid” play will certainly enhance his characteristics.

Pedri, however, could also be succeeded by his compatriot Lamine Yamal, always quoted at 8.00. A precocious talent, at only 16 years old he is already an undisputed starter for Barcelona and should start from the 1′ also with Luis De La Fuente’s Spain side. With a haul of 7 goals and 10 assists in the season, it is impossible not to consider him among the potential winners of the Best Young Player of the European Championship award.
