A year ago, in the Monte Carlo tournament itself, Lorenzo Musetti scored one of the most important victories of his – still short – career by beating 24-time Slam champion Novak Djokovic in three sets (4-6 7-5 6-4).
A success that seemed like it could be the ultimate consecration for the young Carrara tennis player, certainly one of the most talented and promising on the circuit. And instead, Musetti has not made many steps forward since then, remaining in a sort of “limbo.” A classic “I’d like to, but I can’t” situation for a player who would have what it takes to break into the top 10 (today he is 24th) but is still too inconsistent and fragile psychologically. In the second round of the Principality’s Masters 1000, for example, he put on a show for over an hour against French tennis enfant prodige Arthur Fils. Then the lights suddenly went out and he was in danger of suffering a resounding comeback (6-3 7-5). It had gone smoothly instead in the first round against US Taylor Fritz, settled in just over an hour with a clear 6-4 6-4.
Nole is itching to get going again
What match will it be at this point against Djokovic? The Serbian champion, meanwhile, two days ago played his first match on the circuit since Indian Wells, when he incredibly surrendered to Italian Luca Nardi.
Against Russian Safiullin Nole was flawless, and in the post-match interview he admitted that he felt he was back on top. In the red season the Belgrade native will have to prove that he has overcome the difficult moment, which probably led to the break with his now former coach Ivanisevic. There are four head-to-heads with Musetti (Djokovic leads 3-1), who on the crushed brick has always managed to put him in trouble.

Musetti is an unpredictable player but on the red he possesses the right weapons to create headaches even for a top champion like Djokovic, as his record shows. Blue is not favored but could win at least one set.
