American Cup, in Group B there is the interesting duel between Ecuador and Venezuela. Not impossible matches instead for USA and Uruguay.
On the Italian night between Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23, between Santa Clara (California) and Houston, the two matches concerning Group B of the Copa America 2024 are staged. A group in which the first two places should be, according to initial predictions, the preserve of Ecuador and Mexico, which on paper have something more than Venezuela and Jamaica.
We start immediately with the interesting challenge between Felix Sanchez’s Tricolor and Fernando Batista’s Vinotinto. With the Spanish coach at the helm – who took over from Gustavo Alfaro after the disappointing World Cup in Qatar – Ecuador is getting important results and seems to have improved especially in terms of defensive tightness.
In the South American qualifying round for the next World Cup, Valencia and his teammates are fifth, with 8 points won in 6 days (3 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss). What’s more, the Tricolor have only conceded 3 goals, one less than first-place Argentina to be exact. The latest friendlies, in which Sanchez’s men won over Bolivia and Honduras (3-1 and 2-1), were also good. Venezuela is also living a positive moment: the Vinotinto even has one point more than Ecuador in the elimination round and dreams of peeling off a pass for what would be the first World Cup in its history. Sanchez in the debut match will be able to count on veteran Valencia but also on Hincapié and Caicedo, who are playing at high levels in Europe with Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea, respectively. The members of Venezuela’s offensive trident (Savarino, Rondon and Soteldo), on the other hand, play between Brazil and Mexico. In the midfield is Casseres, owned by Toulouse. All in all, we say Ecuador slightly favored but it is highly likely that Venezuela will manage to score at least one goal and sell their skins dearly.
Predictions on the other matches
Defeated in the Concacaf Nations League final last March, Mexico will try to get off on the right foot. Jaime Lozano’s El Tri, a finalist in the 1993 and 2001 editions, will make its debut in Texas against approachable Jamaica. The three points are well within reach.
The Raggae Boyz, led by Icelandic head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, are fresh off wins over the Dominican Republic and Dominica in friendly matches, two tests, however, that were not particularly probing. And they meet Mexico again a little less than a year after the Gold Cup semifinal, in which El Tri got the better of them with a clear 3-0 win, a result that could come up again this time. Jamaica, which relies on West Ham center forward Antonio in attack, has never collected a single point in the two editions of the Copa America it has taken part in. On Sunday night-Monday, however, it’s the turn of hosts the United States, drawn in Group C along with Bolivia, Uruguay and Panama. Gregg Berhalter’s men, after winning the Concacaf Nations League in the spring, lost to Colombia and drew with Brazil in pre-Cup America tests. Bolivia, dangerous only when playing in front of their own public because of the altitude, should not be an insurmountable obstacle, far from it. We hypothesize a match of at least three goals total, in which the “Italians” McKennie, Pulisic, Musah and Weah will most likely shine.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay won’t take any big risks either against Panama’s not irresistible selection. Celeste has everything to go all the way in this competition, and against the Central Americans they should also be able to keep their goal unbeaten, scoring two to four goals.
