Conference League, usual roundup of matches in the first preliminary round of the third continental event: predictions.
Just over a month has passed since the epilogue of the 2023-24 Conference League, won by Olympiacos Greeks in the Athens final against Fiorentina. But, as with the other two UEFA competitions (Champions and Europa League), it is already time to restart. This event will also undergo changes starting with this edition: 36 teams instead of 32 and no more group stage as we have known it so far.
There will be a large single round in which each will play six matches facing six different opponents (three at home and three away) and the top eight will qualify for the round of 16, while those ranked ninth to twenty-fourth will have to play the play-offs in order to land among the top 16.
Everything is unchanged, however, as far as the preliminary rounds are concerned: there will be four of them – the five teams from the major European leagues (including Fiorentina) come into play at the last – and they will compete in round-robin matches. The first round will feature the usual roundup of matches between mostly unknown teams from uncompetitive leagues. For the Bosnians of Sarajevo, still in the hunt for their first win in the Conference League qualifiers, there is a tricky trip to Kazakhstan against Aktobe, whose league has already started more than 10 days ago: their greater athletic freshness could make the difference. Easier task, on the other hand, for the Irish of Derry City, clear favorites against Bruno’s Magpies gibilterrini. External success is also likely for Luxembourg’s Dudelange, who will face AC Escaldes, a club from Andorra, in the first round.
The predictions on the other matches
The Finnish side KuPS will be on the hunt for the big one, and they are likely to bring their greater experience to bear at home to Luxembourg’s Strassen in a challenge that promises goals.
A discourse that also applies to the match between the Welshmen of Bala Town and the Estonians of Paide: again we could see an outside win. At least one goal per side is expected in Liepaja-Vikingur, VPS-Zalgiris and Stjarnan-Linfield, which are expected to be more balanced than expected. There will also be no shortage of goals in the two challenges featuring two San Marino teams, Tre Penne and La Fiorita, as well as Bravo-Connah’s Quay and Shelbourne-St Joseph’s.
