Chile-Argentina, Copa America: streaming, probable formations, predictions

by Mike

Chile-Argentina is a match valid for the second day of the group stage of the Copa America and is played Wednesday at 03:00 (Italian time): statistics, probable formations, predictions.

Argentina to secure first and place and qualification, Chile to continue moving up the standings after a 0-0 draw with Peru in the opener. The reigning world and South American champions did not disappoint expectations in the first match, as well as the opening match of the event, regulating a superb and strong-willed Canada 2-0.

The goals, Messi and his teammates, were all scored in the second half: Julian Alvarez unlocked the match, then in the final interista Lautaro Martinez made the result more rounded. On the dry side was the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who in any case had two tasty chances to get on the scoresheet. The defense held up as well: it was the third clean sheet in the last five matches played by the selection led by Lionel Scaloni, who since the defeat to Saudi Arabia in the Qatari World Cup (November 2022) has collected only one knockout. It was fair to expect something more instead from Chile, which against Peru barely managed to shoot once on goal. Not a good performance overall for Ricardo Gareca’s Roja, which still relies on the “old guard,” consisting of the various Sanchez, Bravo, Isla and Vargas.

This will be the 29th confrontation between the two representatives in the Copa America, with a balance that almost exclusively smiles on Argentina (21 wins, eight draws and no success for the Chileans, who, however, came out on penalties in 2015 and 2016, on both occasions winning the final). Eight years ago, in the very futuristic New Jersey facility – the MetLife in East Rutherford – Chile got the better of the Albiceleste from the penalty spot. Seven protagonists of that match are still part of the roster of the two selections today (Bravo, Isla, Sanchez, Vargas, Di Maria, Messi and Otamendi).

The prediction

Argentina was not flawless against Canada – at the back, for example, it took a few too many risks – but there is nothing to suggest a possible misstep with Chile, which appeared inconsistent especially in the possession phase. We hypothesize a clear-cut success for the Albiceleste, which should also keep its goal inviolate.
