Canada-Chile is a match valid for the third day of the group stage of the Copa America and is played Sunday at 02:00 (Italian time): statistics, probable formations, predictions.
In Group A, that of defending champion Argentina, the big surprise so far has been freshman Canada. The North Americans, who before this edition had never taken part in the Copa America, have shown for the umpteenth time that they are a growing soccer movement, and their success last Tuesday at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City against Peru (0-1) only attests to the excellent work being done by U.S. selector Jesse Marsch, who has been in charge for only a few months.
Canada got the better of the Bicolor thanks to a goal from its most representative player, Lille striker Jonathan David, who decided it with 15 minutes left. Marsch and his team did well to take advantage of numerical superiority: in fact, Peru was left with 10 men at the start of the second half due to the expulsion of Araujo, who ended up in the shower early after a consultation between Var and the referee. A success that propels Canada to second place, on 3 points. Three less than Argentina, which has already qualified – and will likely advance to the round of 16 as first in the grouping – and two more than the Chile-Peru pair.
This means that even by splitting the stakes with the Chileans on the third day of the group stage, the Canucks would likely clinch a historic qualification to the round of 16, provided Peru does not beat Argentina in the other match being played at the same time.
Chile, on the other hand, must win at all costs to hope for passage to the round, in addition to obviously “cheering” Argentina. Jorge Fossati’s selection, after a deadlocked draw with Peru in the opener (0-0), came close to a draw with the Albiceleste, capitulating only with 2 minutes left (1-0, decisive goal by Lautaro Martinez). In the event of a tie on points, remember that the first discriminator is goal difference.
The prediction
Chile undoubtedly has something more than Canada, especially in terms of international experience, but the distances between these two selections at the moment do not seem so wide, far from it. It would not be a surprise, then, if the Canucks manage to avoid defeat in a match that will most likely turn on in the second half, with the Chileans obliged to win to hope for qualification to the round of 16. Given the recent offensive numbers of both, however, we do not expect a game full of goals.
