Brighton-Liverpool is a match on the eighth day of the Premier League and is played on Sunday at 15:00: TV, formations, predictions.
The truth challenge with Liverpool comes at a time of downturn for Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton. The Seagulls haven’t won for three matches (League Cup, Premier League and Europa League), a streak in which they have collected two defeats – one of them, very heavy, against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, who overwhelmed them with a tennis score 6-1 – and a draw, obtained in a comeback in Marseille (2-2) against Gattuso’s new team.
Is the ‘magic’ over all of a sudden? Absolutely not, as this is the first year that Brighton are called upon to fight on three (actually, four) fronts. And losing a few points on the road is certainly not the end of the world. Indeed, the league table sees the Seagulls still in the top six, not far from the leading pack. De Zerbi’s ideas of play have won everyone over in England, but they also involve a significant expenditure of energy, and if the players lack lucidity it is normal that they risk slipping up. While against the Villans Brighton turned off the lights after going down, in France despite finishing two goals down in the first 20 minutes they had the strength to recover, bringing home a precious point for qualification purposes.
Liverpool were also involved in the Europa League this week, winning 2-0 over Belgium’s Union Saint-Gilloise, with Gravenberch and Diogo Jota scoring in the win.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have won eight of their last nine games but there is something to be said for the defeat they suffered a week ago in their direct clash with Tottenham (2-1) due to Luis Diaz’s goal being unjustly disallowed for a non-existent offside. A blatant error by the Var, who later apologised for the glaring oversight. Liverpool will not be able to rejoin two unforgettable exes such as Milner and Lallana, now at Brighton, but both injured. De Zerbi must also do without Enciso, Estupinan and Moder. Reds instead without the disqualified Diogo Jota and Jones.
The prediction
Both will want to redeem their last league defeat and they will do so in all likelihood in a no-holds-barred, open-hearted clash. Liverpool are a little more consistent than the Seagulls, but our advice is to go for the goal. There should be no shortage of entertainment at the Amex Stadium.
