Brasileirao, Botafogo with five days to go must defend a 4-point margin: Palmeiras hopes for its own possible misstep.
There are only five days left in Brasileirao, Brazil’s top soccer league. The fight for the title is still open: ahead of everyone there is always Artur Jorge’s Botafogo, which dreams of a resounding and unforgettable “one-two.” The Rio de Janeiro club, in fact, will also play the Copa Libertadores final next November 30 in the all-Brazilian derby with Atletico Mineiro.
The two teams will have a “dress rehearsal” for the match that will be staged at the “Monumental” stadium in Buenos Aires in 10 days’ time on the very fifth-to-last day, in a match that basically has value only for Botafogo, called to defend tooth and nail its 4-point lead over second-placed Palmeiras. Since August, Fogao has barely lost a game – a painless defeat in the return semifinal with Penarol – and this year has already beaten, albeit quite decisively (3-0), Atletico Mineiro, brilliant in Libertadores but disappointing in the Brasileirao. Gabriel Milito’s men have not won a game since their semifinal success with River Plate and have been on a seven-match winless streak. The risk of staying out of the top 7 at this point is very real, but Atletico Mineiro, currently tenth in the standings, now seems to want to put all their eggs in the cup basket. Reason why we hypothesize a coup by Botafogo, close to writing an indelible page in its history.
Palmeiras visits Bahia
Margin of error also reduced for Botafogo’s pursuers, who are forced to win as many as possible between now and December 8 to try to close the gap with the leader.
The Palmeiras, at -4, does not give up and proved it on the last day by narrowly beating Gremio but the Verdao risks paying dearly for the defeat it suffered two weeks ago at home to Corinthians, the only one since August.
Abel Ferreira’s men are slightly favored in the challenge with Bahia, a team in the midst of a race for a place in the top seven but coming off three losses in a row (four in the last five): the 3 points should come although it may not be a walk in the park for the Paulista club. Victory is also likely for Corinthians, one of the most in-form teams in the last period: the Timao, thanks to its four wins in a row, has recovered several positions in the standings and is not even very far from seventh place, occupied precisely by its next opponent, Cruzeiro. Confidence can also be given to Athletico Paranaense, which only a few days ago scalped Atletico Mineiro: an within reach victory against bottom-of-the-table Atletico Goianiense, one step away from mathematical relegation and disastrous away from home (just 9 points won in 16 games). Two away matches that conceal some pitfalls, finally, for Flamengo and São Paulo, engaged against Cuiabá and Bragantino respectively, matches that should not hold much spectacle.
