Three titles in a season that promised to be nefarious, because of the few matches played, is quite an achievement. An achievement that no one, probably, expected. Least of all those who were convinced that Matteo Berrettini was a washed-up tennis player and that, rather than aiming for Slams, he would be better off jumping into reality TV.
There is no Isle of Famous audition on the horizon, however, for the former top ten player. The Roman won, last spring, the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech. A success not at all accidental, indeed. He repeated himself, then, in the summer, imposing himself first in Gstaad and then in Kitzbuhel. But his run certainly does not end here, quite the contrary. The concrete season can only bring good things, given that Matteo defends, as of now, just a handful of points.
There is only to gain, in short, and that is why Berrettini wasted no time. Just enough time to receive official confirmation from the organizers of the Western & Southern Open that he was already flying to the States, as amply demonstrated by the videos that appeared on social media. For it is across the Ocean that he will resume his ride, with the clear intention of returning to areas of the rankings that best suit his tennis talents.

The former Italian No. 1 will make his debut in Cincinnati next week, making use of the wild card the organizers decided to grant him. He was originally supposed to face the qualifiers, while now he will no longer be required.
With the wild card, he has secured direct access to the main draw of this second Masters 1000 half on cement, so he will be able to go on the hunt for points that will prove crucial for the continuation of this season. His hope, never concealed, is to be seeded at the star-studded Slam, which will only happen should he climb a few more rungs. Or, at worst, at the Australian Open next January.
