Berrettini surprise: fans displaced

by Martin

Matteo Berrettini, the news came out of the blue and made the tennis player and his many fans gloat: they were displaced.

Winning two tournaments consecutively is not for everyone. Yet, as the well-informed will certainly know, Matteo Berrettini has succeeded in this incredible feat. First he routed the competition in Gstaad, in the Swiss Alps, where a few years ago he had won, coincidentally, his first Atp title.

Seven days later he was raising a second cup, certainly less “bulky” (in a literal sense) than the first, but just as prestigious. The Roman, at the culmination of a path far from free of obstacles, also won in Kitzbuhel, putting his signature on a one-two punch that allowed him to regain credibility but also to take a few more steps toward the goal he set himself.

The black period he went through, during which he played really very little, had significant repercussions on his ranking, so much so that, for a while, he was even outside the top 100 in the world. Upon his arrival in the Alps, which were the perfect setting for his rebirth, he was 82nd in the Atp rankings, but the 500 points he amassed between the two dates allowed him to return, at last, to 40th in the world rankings.

Berrettini, it happened suddenly: unexpected surprise, gloats the Roman

His ascent to success could continue, however, as Berrettini is in particularly good shape and intent, moreover, on returning to the top of the rankings

The opportunity to climb a few more rungs will come as early as August 12. Matteo has received a wild card and will participate in the Cincinnati Masters 1000, scheduled for next August 12-19. In the absence of this “gift,” he would have had to play the qualifiers, while in this way he will have direct access to the main draw of the tournament to be played in Ohio.

It will be a golden, unrepeatable opportunity to further improve the ranking and, why not, to have the mathematical certainty of being seeded at the Us Open at the end of August. The other wild cards were awarded to hosts Reilly Opelka and Marcos Giron, and yet another went to Australian Max Purcell.
