Let’s face it: we all hoped that the miracle of two years ago could be repeated. Matteo Berrettini, returning after several months of stop related to his hand injury, had won first the Boss Open and then, seven days later, the legendary Queen’s tournament. Hopes were high that he could once again nab the Wimbledon final, so well was he, but, alas, the Covid had denied him the chance to fight on his heart’s court.
And when, this year, he set foot on the field again after yet another stop and a false start, everything looked remarkably the same as it did two years ago. In Stuttgart he did, indeed, reach the final act, but a prodigious Jack Draper took him out on a comeback to win his first Atp title. A few days later, this time in Halle, Berrettini abdicated in the second round. This time against Marcos Giron, who, just like the Briton, defeated him after going down a set.
The circumstances are quite different, in short, except for one detail: although he has not won any title on grass, in this sultry June, Matteo continues to be one of the favorites for the Wimbledon title race.
