Irrefrainable Berrettini, official confirmation comes: he does it for her and for no other reason in the world.
If the draw had been a tad more benevolent, we would be here today telling a tad different story. Maybe Matteo Berrettini would not have won Wimbledon, but certainly, given the level of other competitors, he would have made it a little farther. And he would have forfeited, therefore, very useful ranking points.
We know very well, however, how it unfortunately turned out, just as we know, at least that, that in London the Roman found all the confirmation he was looking for. In the derby with Jannik Sinner he fared well, although the number 1 then defeated him, and that is no small thing. It is proof of the fact, indeed, that there, somewhere, is still that top player to whom fate has too often reserved unpleasant surprises.
It will be the concrete, eventually, that will confirm this hypothesis, with the understanding that, before even flying to the States, Berrettini will be busy on clay. From now on, in fact, at least so he hopes, he will make a non-stop trip. And he will do it for the rankings, to try to turn things around and gain positions that may come in handy, when the time comes, in the main draw for the main draw tables of the tournaments in which he will participate until the end of the year.
Berrettini, full speed ahead: from now on it’s serious
Today he will make his debut at the Atp 250 in Gstaad, where he won his first Atp title. From the Swiss Alps, he will then move to the Tyrol, Kitzbuehel, in the week of July 22-27, for a final stint on the chopped brick.
At that point, with the North American trip looming, he won’t even have time to rest. The Montreal Masters 1000 will begin on August 6, so between training and travel, he won’t have a moment’s respite. After Canada he will leave for Cincinnati, for the event to be played from August 12 to 19. And then, just seven days later, it will be time to make her debut at Flushing Meadows and relive emotions that, that much is certain, she will never have forgotten.
There, 5 years ago, he grabbed his first Slam semifinal, reasoning that there is good reason to think that at the Us Open, as always after all, he will light up once again. With the understanding that, unfortunately, right now the ranking does not smile on him. Not having had a chance to defend the points he won last year on the grass at Wimbledon, Matteo has slipped further in the rankings. He is now 82nd and has only 715 points, so he will have to put his best foot forward to move up a bit and secure, at least this time, a better draw. And hopefully it will have been worth it, then, to trot from continent to continent in the good name of ranking.
