Athletic Bilbao-Barcelona, Spanish Super Cup: free streaming, lineups, prediction

by Michael

Athletic Bilbao-Barcelona is a match valid for the semifinals of the Spanish Super Cup and is played on Wednesday at 8 p.m.: news, statistics, likely lineups and prediction.

Barcelona’s 2025 began with a predictable goleada in the Copa del Rey against lowly Barbastro, but making more news in the Catalan capital (and beyond) is the Dani Olmo affair. Both the Spanish Football Federation and La Liga, in fact, rejected the request to sign the blaugrana’s two summer signings, Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, for the well-known salary cap reasons.

But President Laporta has announced a new appeal, this time to the Administrative Court of Sport, with the aim of overturning everything and not being forced to release the former Leipzig (paid 60 million in the last summer market). Barcelona has even summoned Dani Olmo for the challenge with Athletic Bilbao, valid for the semifinals of the Spanish Super Cup, scheduled – as was the case for the Italian Super Cup – in Saudi Arabia. For Barça, it is the first level test of the new year: Hansi Flick’s men had not ended 2024 in the best of ways, squandering the advantage they had accumulated over the previous months over the Madrid-based sides, Real and Atletico, and being overtaken by both (the Blancos have five more points, the Colchoneros three but have a match to make up). Prior to the King’s Cup challenge, the Blaugrana had cashed in two defeats, both of which accrued in front of their own fans: the first with newly promoted Leganes and the second with Atletico.

Athletic believes in it

And Athletic? Behind the big three are the Basques, who in 19 days have scored only two points less than Barcelona (36).

Ernesto Valverde’s team has not lost since October, considering all competitions, and wants to perform well in the Super Cup as well. The domestic cup match against Logrones, in that sense, served to shake off some rust after the break: to eliminate a lower-ranked opponent Athletic needed penalties (the regulars had ended 0-0). For this match there is the doubt Nico Williams: he did not train as a precaution but it is thought it could be pretactic on the part of Valverde, a former player in the match.

The Prediction

There are the pressuppositions to witness a balanced match that is anything but a foregone conclusion, given the moment Barcelona is going through. It cannot be ruled out that Athletic Bilbao will manage to avoid defeat in regulation time, which should end with both teams scoring.
