USG-Club Brugge prediction: they are unbeaten in their last six head-to-head matches

by Henry

As usual, the Belgian football season kicks off with the Super Cup match between the reigning Pro League champions, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, and the national cup holders, Club Brugge. Last May, USG wrote an important page in its history, returning to the Belgian throne 90 years after its last victory. Sebastien Pocognoli’s men got the better of Club Brugge in the mini-league between the top six teams in the regular season: the decisive victory came on the last day against Gent, who were beaten 2-1 thanks to goals from Ivanovic and David (who scored twice).

Winning the title was the goal that the populous municipality of Brussels had set itself since 2021, the year it regained its place in the top flight. Since then, the club has grown exponentially, even becoming a regular fixture in European competitions (reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League in the 2022-2023 season is no mean feat).

Club Brugge, on the other hand, had to console themselves with success in the Belgian Cup: 10 years after their last triumph, Nicky Hayen’s Nerazzurri defeated Anderlecht in the final (2-1), remaining the team with the most victories in this competition (12 in total). Club Brugge’s desire for revenge should not be underestimated. In addition to having to settle for second place in the league, last summer they saw the Super Cup slip away from them, with the yellow and blues winning 2-1 at the Jan Breydel Stadion. The Nerazzurri have never managed to get the better of USG in their last six meetings (four draws and two wins for Saint-Gilloise): they have not won since April 2024.

The prediction

Since 2004, only once has the Super Cup been won by the away team: it was USG who broke this “curse” last year, conquering Bruges. It looks set to be a very evenly matched game, like the last four—three draws and one win for USG—in which both teams are likely to score at least once. Given that there is very little to separate the two sides, extra time and possibly penalties cannot be ruled out.

Probable line-ups for USG-Club Brugge
