Sassuolo-Lazio prediction: it hasn’t happened in Emilia since 2021, but the trend is coming to an end

by Martin

Before the break, Maurizio Sarri and his Lazio side had crushed Verona 4-0 to claim their first win of the season. This was an important and significant reaction from the Biancocelesti after their false start in Como (2-0), a match in which they were outclassed by Cesc Fabregas’ ambitious team. At this point, one wonders which is the “real” Lazio and, above all, whether the Tuscan coach will once again be able to compensate, with his proactive play, for the gaps that the club has been unable to fill in the transfer market due to the block.

The good news, meanwhile, is that almost the entire attack scored against Verona: Taty Castellanos broke his duck, but Zaccagni and Dia, the latter coming off the bench, also found the net.

Sarri undoubtedly expects answers from the match in Reggio Emilia against Sassuolo, the only team still stuck on zero points. No, it has not been a brilliant start for Fabio Grosso’s Neroverdi, despite giving the impression of being the best equipped of the three newly promoted teams. In their debut, the Emiliani were unable to do much against Italian champions Napoli (0-2), while on the second day they surrendered to Cremonese (3-2) in a head-to-head clash: De Luca’s penalty in injury time nullified Pinamonti and Berardi’s double comeback. Grosso’s position remains solid, but another defeat, the third in a row, would certainly not be good for a coach who, unlike in Serie B, has everything to prove in Serie A.

Sassuolo-Lazio: the latest news on the lineups

Grosso has not recovered Thorstvedt, who should be available again starting next week. In midfield, there is a chance for Canadian Koné, who will partner Lipani and Vranckx. On the right, in defense, Coulibaly is favored over Walukiewicz, while in attack, the trident of Berardi, Pinamonti, and Laurienté is likely to be confirmed, although Volpato and Cheddira are also looking for space on the bench.

On the other side, Sarri is concerned about Rovella’s condition. The former Juve player will remain in doubt until the last minute: if he is ruled out, Cataldi will take over in midfield. Romagnoli returns to defense after missing the first two games due to suspension. Cancellieri is confirmed up front.

The prediction

Lazio’s rediscovered scoring form bodes well: Sassuolo is one of the teams that has conceded the most goals (5) along with Torino and Verona. In short, it is not an impenetrable wall facing the Biancocelesti, who should also be able to find the back of the net in Reggio Emilia. On the other hand, however, Berardi and his teammates have the attacking quality to cause problems for the capital side: both teams are likely to score at least once, interrupting a trend that has been going on in Emilia since 2021.
