Peru vs Bolivia prediction: a win to keep hopes alive

by Mark

This looks like the last chance for Peru, which is languishing at the bottom of the South American qualifying group with only 7 points from 12 games. The Bicolor’s hopes of taking part in the next World Cup are dwindling fast, currently six points behind seventh place, which would secure a place in the inter-zone play-offs and is, coincidentally, occupied by Bolivia, their next opponent.

Peru has failed to capitalize on home advantage, winning only once in six games in front of its own fans, and above all has scored very few goals: barely three in total. These results cost the job of former coach Jorge Fossati, who was sacked last November after a narrow defeat to Argentina (1-0). Oscar Ibanez is now at the helm of the Peruvian national team and faces a real challenge to get La Bicolor to the 2026 World Cup in North America. To keep their hopes alive, they must take all three points against Bolivia, who have never won in their last 10 away games in Peru. La Verde would currently qualify for the play-offs, but Venezuela are just one point behind them. They are four points behind sixth-placed Paraguay.

Oscar Villegas’s men enjoyed a magical spell between September and October, winning three games in a row, including a historic away victory against Chile. However, they then came back down to earth with a heavy 6-0 defeat to Argentina, an equally clear defeat in Ecuador (4-0), and a 2-2 draw at home against Paraguay. Villegas will be without the injured Chura and Henry Vaca but has called up some interesting young players, notably Arroyo, who is owned by Shakhtar Donetsk. On the other side, Ibanez is still relying on veterans: in addition to Lapadula, the Peruvian coach has recalled Advincula and Carrillo.

Prediction

The change of coach should have the desired effect: Peru are slight favorites against a Bolivia side that struggles away from home, far from the high altitudes. We don’t expect more than two goals in total.
