MLS predictions for June 29: many teams looking for redemption, surprises ahead

by Thorsten

The Seattle Sounders’ adventure in the Club World Cup is already over. It’s time for Brian Schmetzer’s men to refocus on MLS: after three defeats against Botafogo, Atletico Madrid, and PSG, they face Austin, a team with whom they share the same position in the Western Conference. Seattle didn’t earn a single point against higher-ranked opponents, but they didn’t disappoint, coming out of every match with their heads held high and without conceding a single goal.

In fact, the Washington State club has impressed with its courageous and uncompromising attitude: it is in the top 10 for total shots attempted and found the back of the net against both the Brazilians and the Spaniards.

These performances could serve as a boost ahead of their next league game, in which Frei and his teammates need to get back to winning ways after two consecutive defeats against Minnesota and Vancouver, in which they conceded a total of six goals. New England will also be looking to bounce back: the Revolution are coming off two straight defeats against top teams Cincinnati and Nashville, both at home, which have seen them slip out of the playoff zone. The challenge against an inconsistent opponent like Colorado seems to be the right opportunity to get back on track. The same could be said for DC United: the Capitals failed to turn the page after their heavy 7-1 defeat to the Fire and lost 2-0 in Salt Lake City in midweek. A healthy Nashville side, unbeaten since the end of April, arrives in Washington this weekend, but it should not be forgotten that closely spaced matches in MLS often hide pitfalls: surprises cannot be ruled out.

Predictions for other matches

The match between Houston Dynamo and St. Louis is a classic clash between two disappointed teams: both are floundering at the bottom of the Western Conference table and are looking for redemption.

We are putting our faith in the Texans, who are eager to end their losing streak, which has now stretched to three games after their defeat in Minnesota this week. Among the potentially most prolific matches, San Jose-Los Angeles Galaxy stands out: the Earthquakes are the most entertaining team in MLS – best attack with 39 goals and a shaky defense – and are ready to take advantage of the enormous difficulties in possession of the Los Angeles team, the worst team in the two Conferences and with a leaky defense. There should be no shortage of excitement in Orlando City-Cincinnati and Chicago Fire-Charlotte, while Toronto’s attack could finally break the deadlock against Portland. Finally, New York Red Bulls-Minnesota United promises to be less eventful.
