Chile-Uruguay prediction: Bielsa seeks confirmation as third consecutive win looms

by Sabrina

This is Chile’s last chance to avoid finishing bottom of the qualifying group. Chile has no other objectives in its match against Uruguay, which brings the curtain down on the Conmebol qualifiers. La Roja, out of the running for some time now, has come to terms with the disappointment: it will not participate in the World Cup to be held in the summer of 2026 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, prolonging an agony that has been going on since 2014, the year of the last World Cup in which the Chileans took part.

While waiting to find out who the next coach will be – Nicolas Cordova is currently the interim coach – Chile is starting to plan for the future. With the Vargas and Sanchez era, which brought two Copa America titles, now over, a generational change can no longer be postponed. In the meantime, La Roja continues to rack up defeats: last Thursday saw their third in a row, against Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil. Chile’s last win dates back to November 2024, against Venezuela. Their haul is meager: 10 points in 17 games and the second-worst attack in the group, barely managing to score a goal away from home. Uruguay, on the other hand, can take advantage of this to gain further confidence after two consecutive victories against Venezuela and Peru, beaten 2-0 and 3-0 respectively (the last time La Celeste won two in a row was in the last Copa America). Already qualified, Marcelo Bielsa’s men could overtake Brazil with a win and finish second behind the unbeatable Argentina. Beating Chile would also mean breaking their away duck, as Uruguay have not won away since 2023.

The prediction

Uruguay proved to be on form against Peru and will probably manage to get a positive result in Chile too in a match that has little to say. The total number of goals should be less than three.
