Bolivia-Brazil prediction: a win may not be enough: all the combinations

by Henry

Last Thursday, Carlo Ancelotti secured his second victory (3-0) as coach of the Brazilian national team against a struggling Chile. This was their second win in a row, as the Seleçao had also beaten Paraguay (1-0) in June, mathematically securing their qualification for the upcoming World Cup.

Against La Roja, however, Brazil also impressed: almost all of the Italian coach’s choices were spot on, and without some of his big names (Vinicius, Rodrygo), he took the opportunity to give playing time to Wesley – Roma’s new full-back, who was among the best on the pitch – Estevao, and Joao Pedro.

A proactive attitude (the formation is essentially a 4-2-4), fluid play, and plenty of motivation. “King Carlo,” with his vast experience at certain levels, will have to make an impact above all on a mental level in an attempt to cement a group that has flopped in recent international competitions precisely because it lacked harmony and cohesion.

On the last day of qualifying, the Seleçao will take on Bolivia at altitude to retain—for what it’s worth—second place in the standings. Marquinhos and his teammates, however, will face a highly motivated team, which will be playing for its last chance to snatch a ticket to the inter-zone play-offs in El Alto. Bolivia, one point behind seventh-placed Venezuela, must win and hope that the Vinotinto, who are playing Colombia, do not do the same. In the event of a tie on points, Venezuela would come out on top due to their goal difference, which is currently much better (-7 compared to -19). Bolivia is counting on its home field advantage: on Thursday, Oscar Villegas’s men suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat in Colombia, confirming their endemic difficulties away from home.

The prediction

Brazil has proven to be stronger than high altitude in its recent trips to Bolivia: two wins and a draw, with the Verde’s last success dating back to 2009. Despite the difference in motivation, we believe that the Seleçao will not be in the mood for gifts, although betting on the double chance at home could be worthwhile.

Probable lineups for Bolivia vs. Brazil
