Venezuela-Peru prediction: last chance to get back in the game

by Martin

There are still 5 days to play but seats on the plane to North America (USA, Canada and Mexico) are running out. Time is running out, especially for those teams that, at the moment, would be out of the running like Venezuela and Peru, eighth and ninth respectively in the standings in a ten-team group.

With sixth place now very far away, these two teams can only try to take seventh place, currently occupied by Bolivia. The hope of qualifying for the World Cup through the inter-zone play-off – only the top six qualify directly – is therefore still alive. Peru, who seem revitalized by Ibanez’s treatment, believe in it.

Last Friday the new coach made his debut with a very important victory against Bolivia, who were beaten 3-1 thanks to goals from Polo, Flores and Guerrero. As well as the 3 points, La Bicolor also found the back of the net again, given that in the last three qualifying matches they had failed to score and from September onwards they had barely managed one goal in six matches. Peru now has 10 points, only three less than the Bolivians.

Venezuela, on the other hand, failed to take advantage of the collapse of the Verde, and is now one place below seventh. La Vinotinto lost 2-1 to Ecuador, the big surprise of these qualifiers, missing out on a victory that, excluding those obtained in the final phase of the last Copa America, has not happened since October 2023. Another worrying statistic for coach Fernando Batista is the number of goals they have conceded: Venezuela have not kept a clean sheet in their last six games, including the friendly against the United States in January.

The prediction

Peru haven’t lost an official match against Vinotinto since 2013. Considering that for the Bicolor this is a sort of last resort, we can expect a positive result from Ibanez’s team, who have regained confidence after their great success against Bolivia. It’s likely that both will score, as happened in the last two previous matches.

The probable line-ups for Venezuela-Peru

VENEZUELA (4-4-2): Romo; Gonzalez, Mejias, Ferraresi, Makoun; Vargas, Rincon, Segovia, Savarino; Rondon, Josef Martinez.
PERU (4-3-2-1): Gallese; Advincula, Garces, Abram, Trauco; Aquino, Tapia, Carrillo; Polo, Flores; Guerrero.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-1
