Tottenham-Manchester United prediction: slew of injuries in showdown between disappointments

by Lea

Probably not even the most pessimistic fans of both teams expected to see, after 24 league rounds, Tottenham and Manchester United in 13th and 14th place in the standings, respectively. A season so far to forget for Spurs and Red Devils, the two big disappointments of this Premier League. The Europe zone is a long way off and the risk of being shut out of everything – unless, of course, one of the two wins the Europa League, a competition in which they are still in the running – is tangible.

A week ago Tottenham was also eliminated from the FA Cup after losing 2-1 at home to Aston Villa. Yet another disappointing performance for Ange Postecoglou’s team, always struggling with numerous absences. The Australian coach did not need only the first goal of Tel, a young French striker arrived in the last market session from Bayern Munich, to avoid the second defeat in a row after the one with Liverpool in the League Cup return semifinal.

Spurs now return to London, where they have never won in their last seven home games: three points have been missing even since October at home. Manchester United, on the other hand, comes from their FA Cup victory over Leicester (2-1), beaten thanks to a Maguire goal in the middle of the second half (if there had been Var, it would have been disallowed for offside). Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils’ coach since last November, hopes his side will resume its march in the league as well. The former Sporting man, however, has yet to make an impact, as since taking the helm only five teams in the Premier have done worse than Man United, which has barely brought home 14 points.

Still a long string of injuries at Tottenham, although Postecoglou could re-embrace starting goalkeeper Vicario, who is in doubt like Maddison, Werner and Udogie. On the other side Amorim will have to give up Mount, Evans and Lisandro to Martinez. Chance for former Lecce outfielder Dorgu, a starter on the left.

The Prediction

Third confrontation of the season between the two teams: Tottenham had the better of the previous two, 3-0 at Old Trafford in the league and 4-3 in London in the League Cup match last December. Is there no two without three? Hard to overbalance, given the difficult moment of both but especially the many absences Spurs have to deal with. We prefer to follow the trend of goals: again, we expect at least three total.

The probable lineups of Tottenham-Manchester United

TOTTENHAM (4-3-3): Vicario; Pedro Porro, Danso, Gray, Spence; Kulusevski, Bissouma, Bentancur; Moore, Tel, Son.
MANCHESTER UNITED (3-4-2-1): Onana; de Ligt, Maguire, Yoro; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dorgu; Diallo, Bruno Fernandes; Hojlund.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 2-2
