Europa League: predictions on Thursday, Aug. 29 matches

by Michael

Europa League, the return matches of the play-offs are played: some already have qualification in their pockets and others have to try to turn it all around.

Not just Champions. In fact, Uefa has decided to make a makeover on the other competitions, the Europa and Conference League, as well. Starting from this edition, there will no longer be rounds but a league phase, in which each team will play eight matches (in Conference they will continue to be six instead) against different opponents – four at home and four away – however always divided into brackets at the time of the draw.

Before knowing the pairings – the date with the Nyon urn is scheduled for Friday 30 at 1 p.m. – we need to wait for the outcome of the play-offs, which put the last places up for grabs. In the Europa League, Ajax has already booked a pass to the single-group stage thanks to its bombastic 4-1 success a week ago at the home of Poland’s Jagiellonia: after suffering so much in the previous round against Panathinaikos, Francesco Farioli’s Lancieri took no chances in Poland and in Amsterdam should record another wide victory, in a match in which the total goals are likely to be more than two again. The Cypriots of APOEL Nicosia, on the other hand, were surprised by the Latvians of RFS Riga in the first leg: 2-1, however, is a reversible result, and in front of their own public the tune is likely to change. Confidence is also placed in Immobile’s Besiktas, who will manage to bend the hostile Lugano in Istanbul after the 3-3 draw in Switzerland: there is a good chance that both will score again.

The predictions on the other matches

Among the most surprising results of the first leg was the 0-0 draw between Ferencvaros and Borac Banja Luka. The Hungarians now have to go for the win in Bosnia, and with a little more precision under goal they should pull it off.

PAOK’s qualification, on the other hand, is already in the bag: the Greek champions in their match in Thessaloniki made a meal of the Irish Shamrock Rovers, who were downed 4-0, and will most likely impose themselves in Ireland as well. Everything was also decided in TSC-Maccabi Tel Aviv after the Israelis’ very clear-cut victory (3-0): there will be no shortage of goals in the return leg either. In the balance, finally, Elfsborg-Molde, Rapid Vienna-Braga and FCSB-LASK Linz: in the Scandinavian derby, the Swedes will try to overturn the 1-0 first leg; same for the Austrians after losing by a narrow margin in Portugal; we foresee great balance instead in Bucharest, although the heirs of the old Steaua have on their side the advantage of the home factor (in the first leg it ended 1-1).
