Europa League, interesting challenge in Lyon between the hosts and Eintracht Frankfurt: the Germans are one step away from the round of 16.
Up there at the top, along with Lazio and Athletic Bilbao (who will take the field a day earlier in this round), is also Eintracht Frankfurt. The Germans have so far been at their best right in the Europa League: four wins, one draw and no losses for Dino Toppmoller’s men, who are running fast in the Bundesliga as well (they are second, alone, behind leading Bayern Munich).
A few points are enough to secure the round of 16: it will be important, in this sense, to at least avoid defeat in the challenge with Lyon, which has 3 fewer points and is seventh in the standings. The one at Groupama Stadium is perhaps the most intriguing match of this round, as two healthy teams that score (and concede as well, truth be told) with extraordinary frequency face each other. The transalpinians have not known defeat since the end of October and come from two very clear successes over Nice and Angers in Ligue 1: there should, therefore, be no shortage of spectacle, and that is why we hypothesize a match of more than 2 total goals and at least one on each side.
Also suggestive is the all-British clash between Rangers and Tottenham. Spurs, reached in the recovery by Roma in the last round (2-2), are on 10 points and cannot risk losing the train that leads directly to the round of 16. However, they must watch out for the Scots, who always have an extra gear at home: by the way, Rangers are performing well and it is not surprising that they have the same points as the Londoners. A balanced match looms, with Tottenham looking to turn the page after their two league defeats to Bournemouth and Chelsea (barely two wins for Spurs since November).
The predictions on the other matches
You can spend a token on Maccabi Tel Aviv, which in the fourth day went on a surprise win at the home of the better-ranked Besiktas (1-3). The Israelis, despite prevailing only over the Turks so far, can still be among the top 24 and start favored with the Latvians of the RFS, stopped at 2.
Among the so-called bigs lagging behind the schedule we also find Porto. Barely 5 points won by Vitor Bruno’s Dragoes, called upon to at least secure the playoffs. To be won at all costs, therefore, the home challenge with the Danes of Midtjylland, but they will not give up easily: in case of success of the Lusitanians would be overtaking, since the Scandinavians have two points more. Victory is also within reach for Real Sociedad, clearly favored over the disastrous Dinamo Kiev, last in the standings – the only one not to have obtained a single point – and by now almost doomed. Finally, as far as goals are concerned, the match between Bodo/Glimt and Besiktas will have to be watched, but Slavia Prague-Anderlecht and Elfsborg-Qarabag will not be outdone either.
