Europa League, the highlight match is the British derby between Manchester United and Rangers: the Red Devils try to put yet another disappointment behind them.
Thanks to three consecutive victories with PAOK, Bodo/Glimt and Viktoria Plzen, Manchester United secured a pass to the Europa League round of 16 play-offs, certain to finish among the top 24. The Red Devils are momentarily stationed in seventh place in the maxi-classification of the second-largest international competition and as of today would qualify directly to the knockout stage without having to go through the playoffs.
To stay there, however, it will be crucial to win the next two games. The first is a fascinatingly rich challenge with Rangers, an all-British “derby.” At Old Trafford United should be able to make the three points theirs, but Ruben Amorim’s team in the last period cannot be trusted blindly. Since mid-December, their only victory came with the Premier League’s tail end, Southampton, and in the next match Bruno Fernandes and his teammates went back to losing, this time in front of their own public against Brighton. The Portuguese coach will be looking for “comfort” in the Europa League: the Scots, however, cannot be underestimated, since they have only one point less and on the last day they imposed a draw on another English side, Tottenham (1-1).
Also aiming for direct qualification with a round in advance is Eintracht Frankfurt, fresh off 3 straight wins in the Bundesliga: few chances for the Hungarians of Ferencvaros, who in any case with 9 points won so far are still in the running on both fronts.
The predictions on the other matches
A tricky trip for the Danes of Midtjylland, currently 23rd on 7 points. For Ludogorets this is one of the last chances to get on the train leading to the play-offs, and playing in Bulgaria is never a walk in the park. In December, in front of their own public, the green-and-whites had, moreover, managed to avoid defeat to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.
Francesco Farioli’s Ajax, on the other hand, cannot make a mistake, engaged in Latvia against RFS, stuck on 3 points and almost doomed: the Lancers should have no problem taking the entire stake in a match that promises to be eventful. Finally, for those who go on the hunt for “goals” can consider the challenges between Royale Union SG and Braga and between Elfsborg and Nice: the Belgians are currently in the top 24 and must fend off a possible assault by the Portuguese themselves, at -1 in the standings, while for the French, entangled in Sweden, it is a sort of last call to avoid having to deal with elimination a round in advance.
