The two main Scandinavian leagues are not taking a break, quite the contrary. For obvious climatic reasons, we are in the middle of the football season here: on this hot Sunday at the beginning of July, four matches are scheduled in the Swedish Allsvenskan and three in the Norwegian Eliteserien.
In Sweden, the spotlight is on AIK, currently third in the standings, just two points behind the leaders. For the Solna club, which has not won a national trophy since 2018, the trip to Halmstad is an opportunity to put further pressure on the two teams ahead of them, leaders Mjallby and Hammarby. The yellow and blacks are coming off a clear 3-0 win over Gothenburg and would still be undefeated if it weren’t for their defeat a month ago at Sirius. However, AIK faces a tricky challenge this weekend against a Halmstad side that is struggling and will do everything it can to escape the relegation zone. No team has conceded more goals than Allansson and his teammates (27), but their defensive numbers have improved significantly in the last two games, and it will not be easy for AIK to take all three points. The men led by Finnish coach Jani Honkavaara are eighth in the standings, far from the European places, and cannot afford to slip up against Degerfors, who will be fighting to avoid relegation. Victory is also within reach for Elfsborg: if the yellow and blacks beat Hacken, they could close the gap on third-placed AIK.
Finally, we expect a balanced match between Gothenburg and Sirius: the 3-0 defeat against AIK may have undermined the home side’s confidence, and they are unlikely to keep a clean sheet.
Moving to Norway, Sarpsborg, on the back of a fine win away to Bodo (2-1), should have no problems against bottom club Haugesund, who are last with only two points from 12 games. The visitors have been disastrous so far, and a big win for Christian Michelsen’s side would not be too surprising.
KFUM Oslo is also coming off a resounding victory against Molde, who were defeated 3-2 in front of their own fans. This was the second consecutive win for the capital club, a nice confidence boost ahead of their match against Byrne, in which they will start as favorites. We conclude with Rosenborg: the Bianconeri, who have failed to pick up three points in three games, will not have an easy time against Sandefjord in a match that is likely to see at least one goal from each side.
