Sinner is never satiated: mea culpa and champion’s mentality

by Michael

Sinner comes clean with the press on the eve of the Finals: the unexpected mea culpa of the South Tyrolean champion.

24 December 2022 Christmas Eve preparations are in full swing everywhere. People running left and right to buy the last gifts, people at the stove from dawn to dusk to make sure the dinner is worthy of the magical atmosphere of the December holiday.

And then there, somewhere up there in the mountains, Jannik Sinner meticulously planned his future. It was precisely during an interview published on December 24 that the South Tyrolean announced to the world what his dream in the drawer was at that very moment. “I can’t wait to start the new year,” he said, as the other tennis players enjoyed their last moments of relaxation before leaving for Australia, “I certainly aim to be present at the e Nitto Atp Finals in Turin in front of the Italian public. It would mean being in the top eight players of 2023 and having had a very good season. ”

So much has he said, so much has he done, that the wish expressed on that prophetic Eve has come true. Jannik in Turin will be there and he hit his goal even before time, as he was one of the first to qualify from a mathematical point of view. He will be there in a whole new, perhaps unexpected capacity: asthe fourthin the Race and especially asthe fourth best player in the world.

Sinner’s regret: I didn’t do enough

There is no recipe. There is no secret. Quite simply, to get this far, Sinner has tried hard. And how strenuous it has been he openly told Gaia Piccardi, who interviewed him for Corriere dello Sport just hours before the start of the Nitto Atp Finals 2023.

The picture that jumps out from his answers is that of a champion who does not think he is a miracle worker. But who knows, on the contrary, that he has sweated out everything fate has intended for him. “After training I ask myself, did I do enough? Could I have tried harder? It’s my job,” Jannik said, “I care. Some people think they work too hard, I always think I didn’t work hard enough. My mentality is this. Even when I arrive in the evening crashed with fatigue, I question myself. ”

“This year,” the Italian No. 1 added, “I will close with 22 tournaments played: fewer competitions, more blocks of work. They say: Jannik has become more muscular. Eh, sure… Instead of going around I locked myself in the gym That’s the only way to grow, in my opinion.” And only in this way does one become a champion. A master worthy of playing with the greatest.
