While Sassuolo has been busy calculating and counting to see when promotion will be mathematically certain, Pisa is once again fearing that Spezia could overtake them after the Ligurians’ victory in last week’s head-to-head match at the Picco stadium. The 3-2 win over the Nerazzurri has allowed Luca D’Angelo’s team to move to within three points of the Tuscan side, who will have to fight tooth and nail to defend second place in the last two months of the regular season to keep their Serie A dream alive.
Sassuolo, on the other hand, has no such problems. Fabio Grosso’s men are nine points clear of Pisa despite slowing down in the last three games (two draws and a win). With promotion now in the bag, the Neroverdi travel to Cittadella this weekend to face a team that was overwhelmed at home by Sudtirol (1-5) last Sunday, suffering their third defeat in less than a month. The Venetians are two points above the playout zone but risk being sucked back into the relegation battle: it will be difficult to react and get back to winning ways against the league’s top team, who are eager to cross the finish line.
After two consecutive defeats, Pippo Inzaghi’s Pisa has a good chance of getting back on track against Mantova, who have won only once since the end of December – the Virgiliani have slipped to fourth from bottom – and have the third worst away record in the league. Spezia, on the other hand, will have to face a Cesena side in good form: the Romagnoli are unbeaten in five games and have not lost at home since December 26. However, victory in the highly anticipated clash with Pisa would undoubtedly be a significant boost for the Ligurians, who should at least be able to avoid defeat at the Manuzzi.
Predictions for the other matches
In the playoff zone, Fabio Caserta’s Catanzaro has taken a few steps back, coming off a disappointing draw with Reggiana and, above all, a clear defeat in Cremona (4-0) against a direct competitor.
The Giallorossi can make amends in the Calabrian derby against their cousins Cosenza, who are bottom of the table and without their striker Artistico (suspended). Iemmello and his teammates are favorites, but watch out for a possible surge of pride from the Lupi, who are back on track after a hard-fought victory—their first in a month—against Reggiana. Juve Stabia, the big surprise of this championship, has lost momentum: only one point in the last three games for the Vespe, who are called upon to defend seventh place against a tough Modena side.
Bari, ninth after consecutive draws with Sampdoria and Sassuolo, could take advantage of a slip-up by the Campanians: Salernitana, second from bottom but reinvigorated by their victory over Modena, vital to keep their hopes of survival alive, are coming to the San Nicola. Frosinone has also picked itself up thanks to two wins against Mantova and Carrarese: the change of coach has had the desired effect, and Brescia, which is in danger, will also have to be careful in Ciociaria. There is a balance between Sudtirol and Carrarese, two teams that would currently be safe, but also at the Mapei Stadium between Reggiana and Sampdoria, both embroiled in the relegation battle and coming off disappointing results.
