There’s less and less time until the end of the Serie B ’24-’25 regular season. While the relegation battle is getting fiercer as the weeks go by, the fight for direct promotion to the top flight shouldn’t hold any big surprises. The top two positions have now been decided: while Sassuolo are one and a half points ahead of the third placed team with a 17 point lead, Pippo Inzaghi’s Pisa have basically mortgaged second place. Last weekend the Tuscans extended their lead over Spezia, who lost at home to Brescia. It was all too easy against the derelict Cosenza, who were beaten 3-0 at the “Marulla”.
This way Pisa have increased their lead over the Ligurians to +8: with seven games still to play, they can’t claim victory yet, but barring some cataclysmic events, the Nerazzurri will join Sassuolo on their “journey” to the upper division, obviously without having to go through the playoffs. Taking advantage of the enthusiasm for their two wins against Mantova and Cosenza, we think Pisa has a good chance of beating Modena too: It’s true, the Canarini – currently 4 points behind the playoff zone – are very solid and they already proved it in the first leg, handing one of the few defeats to Inzaghi’s team, but it will be difficult to come out unscathed from a stadium that will be overflowing with enthusiasm for a goal that has been dreamed of for decades and that seems increasingly close.
Three points are also within reach for Frosinone, revitalized by the arrival of Paolo Bianco on the bench. The Ciociari, in addition to not losing for two months, are fresh from four wins in a row, the last one obtained by beating Sampdoria (0-3) at Marassi. This has allowed the Giallazzurri to move to +3 on the playout zone: by beating bottom club Cosenza – the Calabrians recalled Massimiliano Alvini during the week, a real move of desperation – Frosinone could even get back into the playoff race, a goal that until recently seemed unattainable.
The predictions for the other matches
All eyes are also on the Lombardy derby between Brescia and Mantova, which is also a battle for survival. Both teams bounced back in the last round, beating Spezia and Sudtirol respectively.
It’s difficult to identify a clear favorite in such a delicate challenge, even if Mantova – who are only one point behind in the standings – are in third to last place for away performance: slight preference for the Rondinelle in a match where the fear of losing could dominate.
The match between Cittadella and Carrarese is quite similar, as they are out of the relegation zone but not out of danger. In any case, the Tuscans seem to be in better shape – only one defeat in the last six games – and should return from their trip to Veneto with at least one point in their pocket.
Michele Mignani’s Cesena, who a week ago didn’t take advantage of Bari’s defeat in Carrara, must defend their eighth place tooth and nail. For the Romagnoli, who have slowed down a bit lately, there is an insidious away game in Bolzano with Sudtirol, who lost again (2-0 in Mantua) after 5 useful results. We close with the anticipated Campania derby between Juve Stabia and Salernitana: the Vespe have caught up with Catanzaro in fifth place thanks to two wins over Modena and Cesena and are slight favorites over the granata, whose situation is becoming increasingly desperate (Salernitana is second to last in the standings).
