PSG-Reims prediction: another trophy on the way, a final with no surprises

by Mike

PSG are aiming to add another piece to the puzzle in one of the most important and decisive season finales in their history. To pass the time while eagerly awaiting the Champions League final against Inter Milan on May 31 in Munich, the Parisians will try to secure another title, in this case the French Cup: the goal is to achieve the so-called “double,” dreaming of a historic treble.

Luis Enrique’s team won (or rather dominated) Ligue 1 with ease, proving to be at least two steps above potential contenders such as Marseille and Monaco, who finished 19 and 23 points behind the multiple French champions respectively. The gap is too wide for a club that, despite losing star player Mbappé this year, has grown in every respect thanks to a cohesive group and a well-defined playing identity, a perfect environment for developing young talent (Barcola, Doué). It is no coincidence that PSG has also made headway in Europe, where, despite the big names in recent seasons, it had only collected flops. In the French Cup, the capital club also had a good dose of luck, meeting only one Ligue 1 club, Lens, which they beat on penalties in the round of 32. Then it was exclusively lower-division teams: Espaly, Le Mans, Stade Briochin, and Dunkerque.

Reims, blessed penalties

Their opponents in the final at the Stade de France are Reims, who have surprisingly reached the final despite a very troubled season: the red and whites are still in danger of relegation, having finished third from bottom in the league and forced to play a play-off against the third-placed team in Ligue 1, Metz (the first leg ended 1-1 during the week).

The French Cup has been the only source of satisfaction for Reims, who are dreaming of their first title since 1962. After eliminating Association Still Mutzig, Reims won three consecutive penalty shootouts against Monaco, Bourgoin, and Angers before beating Cannes 2-1 in the semifinals. Coach Samba Diawara is likely to prioritize the play-off against Metz, resting those who have played a lot during the week ahead of the return leg. Luis Enrique will also make some assessments: Safonov could replace Donnarumma in goal, while Gonçalo Ramos, the competition’s top scorer with five goals, is pushing for a place in attack.

The prediction

Reims has not beaten PSG since 2019, but in the league that just ended, it was one of three teams, along with Nice and Nantes, to avoid defeat against the Parisians. The problem for the Red and Whites is that the French Cup final came between two very delicate promotion-relegation play-off matches against Metz, which will inevitably take a lot of physical and mental energy out of them. We therefore predict a fairly clear win for PSG, with more than three goals in total.

Probable line-ups for PSG-Reims

PSG (4-3-3): Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes; Joao Neves, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz; Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, Barcola.
REIMS (5-4-1): Diouf; Sekine, Gbane, Okumu, Kipré, Akieme; Ito, Am. Koné, Atangana, Nakamura; Siebatcheu.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 3-1
