With the title now heading to Liverpool – the Reds – and a relegation battle that seems to be all but decided (the three teams that were promoted last season will most likely return to the Championship), all that remains in the Premier League is to watch the fierce battles for a place in next season’s Champions League and other European competitions.
Based on the current UEFA rankings, the English top flight would send five clubs, not four, to the continent’s most important competition at the end of the season. There are several candidates: at the moment, there are only five points between fourth-placed Chelsea and ninth-placed Bournemouth.
Manchester City, which has had a season well below expectations and is grappling with a myriad of problems, also risks being left out. The reigning English champions, who are now only in contention for fourth place and the FA Cup, are coming off yet another defeat—their ninth in the league—at City Ground against Nottingham Forest (1-0), which cost them fourth place to Chelsea. In the midst of an identity crisis and a poor run of results, Pep Guardiola’s men will also have to be wary of Brighton, who come to the Etihad Stadium on the back of six consecutive wins in the Premier League and FA Cup. It is a truly exciting time for the Seagulls, who are just one point behind City in the table and in the thick of the race for Europe. Keep an eye out for a possible surprise, but for those who want to play it safe, our tip is on the number of goals, which should not be lacking.
Predictions for other matches
Everton’s unbeaten run could continue, as they recorded their eighth Premier League result (third draw in a row) at Molineux against Wolverhampton on Saturday.
The Toffees are destined for a comfortable survival – they are 16 points clear of the third-bottom team – but, rejuvenated by Moyes, they are also aiming to achieve some satisfaction. The Scottish coach will try to take advantage of the inconsistency of his former team, West Ham, to return to winning ways at Goodison Park after more than a month.
The Hammers, on 33 points like Everton, continue to struggle and last Monday lost again at home to Newcastle: they cannot be trusted. Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, have a unique opportunity: the Garibaldi Reds, third in the table for several weeks now, are starting to believe in a historic Champions League qualification and should not slip up against the derelict Ipswich Town. Finally, Wolverhampton can move away from the relegation zone when they visit Southampton, who are now one and a half feet in the Championship. Wolves are favorites, but watch out for the pride of Ivan Juric’s team, who were able to score a goal against leaders Liverpool at Anfield in the last round (3-1).
