Manchester United vs Arsenal prediction: a big win despite absences

by Mike

Once upon a time – not so long ago, to be honest – Manchester United and Arsenal were considered the Premier League’s biggest rivals, especially when two coaches of the caliber of Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger were at the helm. Today, however, there are 21 points between the two teams after 27 league games: while the Gunners are desperately trying to stay in the title race despite the 13 points separating them from leaders Liverpool, the Red Devils are stuck in the right side of the table, a long way from the European places.

The only “lifeline” left for Ruben Amorim’s men is the Europa League: last Thursday, they shared the spoils with Real Sociedad in San Sebastian (1-1), not a bad result—considering the reshuffled squad—as Bruno Fernandes and his teammates will have the opportunity to play the return leg at Old Trafford next week.

Gunners on fire in the Champions League

Last weekend, however, United fans had to swallow yet another bitter pill: elimination from the FA Cup, a competition they were defending champions of, at the hands of Fulham after a penalty shootout. Arsenal, on the other hand, put on a real show of strength during the week, scoring seven goals against the unfortunate PSV Eindhoven (1-7) in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Despite an attack decimated by injuries, Mikel Arteta’s team made a big statement in the Netherlands, practically securing their place in the quarter-finals. Now the Basque coach will be looking to get back on track in the league: in their last two games, Arsenal have picked up just one point against West Ham and Nottingham Forest, failing to score a single goal.

The prediction

The title is probably heading to Liverpool, but Arsenal have no intention of giving up: Arteta’s men, buoyed by their Champions League rout, can also emerge victorious at Old Trafford (it would be their fifth consecutive league win against Manchester United). Unlike the two previous meetings this season (2-0 for the Gunners in December in the Premier League, United’s revenge in the FA Cup on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time), we expect a few more goals.

Probable line-ups for Manchester United-Arsenal

MANCHESTER UNITED (3-4-2-1): Onana; Yoro, de Ligt, Lindelof; Mazraoui, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Dalot; Garnacho, Zirkzee; Hojlund.
ARSENAL (4-3-3): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly; Odegaard, Partey, Rice; Sterling, Merino, Trossard.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-2
