Two of France’s top-ranked teams will do battle in the Ligue 1 Week 8 post-match. Lyon, who seem to have turned over a new leaf after a disappointing year in which they failed to qualify for any European competition, host the league leaders, the stellar Psg of Messi and Mbappé. Currently fifth in the standings with 13 points, Peter Bosz’s team has appeared to decline after their excellent start. The four victories in the first five matches were followed by two ugly and unexpected away slips against Lorient (3-1) and Monaco (2-1). Defeats that threaten to erase the good things Lyon had shown in August.
The Dutch coach is confident of a comeback in front of his own public: at the Groupama Stadium, in fact, the Gones have always won, even if the successes have come against not particularly competitive teams such as Ajaccio, Troyes, Auxerre and Angers. Lyon, like last year, tend to shine from the midfield upwards, but at the same time continue to concede too many goals. They conceded nine, a fact that Bosz must take into account if he does not want to repeat the mistakes of the past. Little to be said, on the other hand, about the battleship led by Christophe Galtier, increasingly ruthless at home. The Parisians have almost always won so far, apart from the home draw a few weeks ago against Monaco.
They have had no slumps even in the Champions League, the club’s big goal, winning their first two matches against Juventus (2-1) and Maccabi Haifa (1-3). In Israel it was no walk in the park: having gone down, they came out on top thanks to the infinite quality of their champions, turning the match around with Messi, Mbappé and Neymar.
The Prediction
A potentially complicated match for Psg, against a team that has never lost at home and wants to return to doing well after two defeats. The Parisians might pay something in terms of athletic freshness, but the victory should still come. Better, however, to bet on goals: Psg’s stellar attack will in a way have an easy time against a defence that is anything but solid. The total goals, on the night at Groupama Stadium, could be more than three.
