Lille-Marseille prediction: it ends like the two previous games this season

by Mike

The last major obstacle between Marseille and qualification for the Champions League – Roberto De Zerbi’s team’s primary objective – is the head-to-head clash with Lille. Yes, because the next two games seem to be well within the reach of Les Phocéens, who will face Le Havre, third from bottom in the table, and Rennes, who are now out of everything. It is therefore a crucial match for the club coached by the Italian coach, who, despite the controversy and tension in the dressing room, has managed to regain second place thanks to two consecutive wins against Montpellier and Brest, both by large margins (5-1 and 4-1).

The decision to take the players away from France for a training camp to regain their composure ahead of the season finale – they trained in Rome, Italy – seems to have worked. However, their lead over third place remains minimal. Nice are just one point behind, while Lille, their next opponents, are only two points behind. Not to mention that Monaco, Lyon, and Strasbourg are also in the running for the Champions League. In short, anything can still happen: to maintain second place, Marseille will have to return to winning ways away from home, something they have not done since last February (their last victory was at Angers). However, it will be very difficult to come away with three points from the Decathlon Arena against a team that has regained momentum in recent weeks, winning four of their last five games thanks to a relatively easy schedule. Lille, meanwhile, are currently fourth in terms of home form: they haven’t lost in front of their own fans in three months and have only done so twice so far.

The prediction

The two previous matches this season ended in draws – both 1-1 – including the French Cup match, in which the Dogues prevailed on penalties. Once again, we expect a very even match, even though Lille are in great form and should at least be able to avoid defeat in a game with at least one goal for each side.

Probable line-ups for Lille-Marseille
