Leipzig-Red Star, Champions League: tv, likely lineups

by Lea

Leipzig-Red Star is a match valid for the third day of the Champions League group stage and is played Wednesday at 9 p.m.: TV, lineups, predictions.

Leipzig will try to hold on to the prediction in a group in which the first two places seem already assigned. Reigning European champions Manchester City have already taken the lead, winning the very clash with Marco Rose’s Roten Bullen, beaten 3-1 three weeks ago on Teutonic soil, and remaining on full points after two days.

Previously, the Germans had imposed themselves with the same result on Young Boys, a match that highlighted the clear gap with the other two teams drawn in Group G, the Swiss and Red Star, the latter being the next opponent of Kampl and his teammates in a match that could already definitively delineate the hierarchies of the grouping. Leipzig is fresh off a convincing victory over newly promoted Darmstadt (1-3) in the Bundesliga, in which former Lens striker Lois Openda, who scored a brace, took center stage. The Roten Bullen thus got off to a great start again after the disappointing deadlocked draw with Bochum on the last day before the break. They are paying, however, for a few too many missteps: in the standings, at the moment, Leipzig is only fifth, but in any case a stone’s throw away from the Bayern-Borussia pair and also from leading Bayer Leverkusen.

Leipzig “book” second place?

If the goal is the round of 16, for Red Star this already tastes like the last chance: a defeat would slip the Serbs to -5 from second place.

Barak Bakhar’s team, after losing at the Etihad Stadium to City, did not go beyond a draw against Young Boys in front of their home crowd: it was a match that had to be won at all costs and instead the red and whites avoided defeat only with two minutes left (2-2) thanks to a Bukari goal. Meanwhile, in the league, the third win in a row came (3-2 against Javor), indispensable to be able to keep up with a wild Partizan, first in the standings with 4 points more than their cousins.

The Prediction

A win would bring Leipzig significantly closer to their round of 16 goal, especially if – as is likely – Manchester City in the other match take a bite out of the Swiss. The Roten Bullen are superior to Red Star and should therefore prevail without major problems, winning by at least two goals difference.

The probable lineups of Leipzig-Red Star

  • LIPSIA (4-2-2): Blaswich; Henrichs, Simakan, Lukeba, Raum; X. Schlager, Kampl; Simons, Forsberg; Poulsen, Openda.
  • RED STAR (4-2-3-1): Glazer; Djiga, Dragović, Rodić, Mijailović; Stamenic, Hwang; Ivanić, Mitrović, Lučić; Ndiaye.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 3-1
