Eredivisie predictions for May 18: the title is up for grabs on a thrilling final day

by Michael

Something absurd happened on the penultimate day of the Eredivisie, which took place last Wednesday. Ajax were caught by Groningen in practically the last minute of the game – in the ninth minute of stoppage time – thus losing the top spot in the standings, overtaken at the last corner by PSV Eindhoven.

Suddenly, the nightmares of the Lancers’ fans came true: the team coached by Italian Francesco Farioli, just ninety minutes from the end of the season, found themselves in second place after squandering a nine-point lead (!) in recent weeks. Ajax is no longer in control of its own destiny: the Amsterdam club, now one point behind PSV, must beat Twente and hope that Sparta Rotterdam does the same against Peter Bosz’s men, who would come out on top in the event of a tie thanks to their huge goal difference advantage.

The Lancers, who have not won in over a month (two points in their last four games), cannot afford any missteps, even if winning may not be enough. Fortunately for them, Twente has little left to play for in the league: AZ Alkmaar has all but won the battle for fifth place, two points ahead and heavily favored in their match against bottom-placed Almere City, who are already relegated. PSV, on the other hand, will face Sparta, who, despite being eleventh, are still in the running for a place in the Conference League qualifying playoffs. However, it is unlikely that the new leaders will see their winning streak – six in a row – come to an end in Rotterdam.

Predictions for the other matches

Fortuna Sittard, tenth but level on 40 points with NEC and Heerenveen, are also dreaming of the Conference League playoffs: the yellow and greens can pull off a coup against Utrecht, who are now mathematically fourth.

Disastrous Willem II still has a chance to save itself through the play-offs: its three-point lead over Waalwijk allows it to sleep soundly, especially since it would remain ahead on goal difference in the event of a tie. However, it could suffer yet another defeat against NAC Breda (Willem II has only managed three draws since last December). The championship is virtually over for Feyenoord, who can no longer be caught by Utrecht in third place: a positive result for Heerenveen, who still dreams of the playoffs, cannot be ruled out. Finally, for those looking for goals, the matches between PEC Zwolle and Groningen – another playoff duel – and between Heracles and NEC are worth considering.
