Club Brugge-Aston Villa and Shakhtar Donetsk-Young Boys, Champions League: predictions

by Martin

Club Brugge-Aston Villa and Shakhtar Donetsk-Young Boys are two matches from the fourth day of the Champions League and are played on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m.: TV, streaming, likely lineups, predictions.

Returning to the continent’s top competition after 41 years, Aston Villa is one of two teams still with full points in the Champions League. Three wins in the first three days of the new league phase for the Birmingham club, which in addition to its successes against Young Boys (0-3) and Bologna (2-0) took the scalp of Bayern Munich, bent 1-0 at Villa Park on the second day.

Six goals scored and none conceded, truly extraordinary numbers that allow coach Unai Emery to look down on everyone, while also boasting the best goal difference (+6). At home, however, there is a slight downturn: two defeats in just a few days, the first with Crystal Palace in the League Cup (costing elimination) and the second in the league, a very heavy one, suffered at home to a direct competitor like Tottenham (4-1). The Champions League therefore represents an opportunity to restart: the Villans, however, cannot afford to take Club Brugge, a “little one” that is performing well, under consideration: the Nerazzurri lost to Borussia Dortmund and Milan but won the direct clash with Sturm Graz and in Belgium they have achieved three wins in a row between cups and the league.

The prediction

Aston Villa should record another positive result in a game in which Club Brugge is also likely to score.

The likely lineups for Club Brugge-Aston Villa

CLUB BRUGGE (4-3-2-1): Mignolet; Sabbe, Ordóñez, Mechele, De Cuyper; Vetlesen, Jashari, Vanaken; Olsen, Tzolis; Nilsson.
ASTON VILLA (4-3-2-1): Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Pau Torres, Digne; Onana, Tielemans, Rogers; McGinn, Ramsey; Watkins.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-2

The Young Boys still in the hunt for the first point

Shakhtar Donetsk has won only one point, Young Boys none. Both, then, have yet to get unstuck offensively: not a single goal in the first three days

At this rate it will be very complicated to get back into the top 24, the goal of both the Ukrainians and the Swiss. The Orange have faced two Italians so far (white-net draw with Bologna, very clear defeat with Atalanta) and Arsenal, managing to avoid the goleada in England (1-0 defeat in London). The Helvetians were overwhelmed by Aston Villa (0-3) and Barcelona (5-0), but in the last round they gave Inter Milan a hard time, who only edged it out 1-0 in Bern. And in their respective leagues? Young Boys, too erratic, has to settle for 10th place (-12 from the top), while Shakhtar is third behind Dinamo Kiev and Oleksandria and is paying for a few too many missteps. For both of them winning this match is crucial: any knockout would risk putting an immediate end to the qualification dream.

The prediction

The feeling is that Shakhtar Donetsk has something more than the Swiss, who are disastrous away from their stadium (at home they “take advantage” of the synthetic playing surface). Let’s give confidence to the orange-oranges in a match of less than four goals total.

The probable lineups of Shakhtar Donetsk-Young Boys

SHAKHTAR DONETSK (4-2-2): Riznyk; Konoplia, Bondar, Matviyenko, Pedro Henrique; Bondarenko, Kryskiv; Zubkov, Eguinaldo; Sudakov, Sikan.
YOUNG BOYS (4-2-3-1): Von Ballmoos; Blum, Lauper, Benito, Athekame; Łakomy, Ugrinic; Virginius, Imeri, Monteiro; Ganvoula.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-0
