Champions League, three challenges complete the first leg schedule of the third preliminary round: Bodo, watch out for wild Jagiellonia.
Spread over two days, the first leg schedule of the third preliminary round of the Champions League closes with three matches. One of them sees Slavia Prague and Union Saint-Gilloise clash, a double challenge that promises great balance. The Czechs have maintained the same setup as last year, which enabled them to reach the round of 16 in the Europa League (they were eliminated by AC Milan). Jindrich Trpisovsky is still on the bench, while slinger Chory, taken from Viktoria Plzen, has arrived to complete the attack.
For Slavia Prague this is their debut in these preliminaries: so far the red and white have only been engaged in the league, where they have picked up a draw and two wins in a row. Also making their cup debut are the Belgians, who, after bidding farewell to German coach Alexander Blessin – in Italy we remember him on the Genoa bench – have turned to Sebastien Pocognoli. Union Saint-Gilloise have already won a trophy, clinching the Belgian Super Cup – Club Brugge surrendered 2-1 last July 20 – and in the league so far they have a draw and a win. Equilibrium, we said, but in our opinion it is Slavia that has a few more chances, and not only because they play in front of their home crowd.
Slightly favored also is Bodo/Glimt first in the standings in Norway – they are 9 points ahead of the second – who will be on the scene at home of the Poles of Jagiellonia, the only ones with a full score since Ekstraklasa started again (3 wins out of 3): there should be no shortage of goals. Also far from a foregone conclusion is the double-header between Slovan Bratislava and APOEL Nicosia: the Slovaks, however, in addition to being able to take advantage of the field factor, have more minutes in their legs than the Cypriots, having made their official debut almost a month ago.
