Champions League: predictions on Wednesday, Aug. 28 matches

by Mark

Champions League, with the last four play-offs the very long preliminaries come to an end: two teams already have one foot in the single group stage.

Last few places up for grabs in the Champions League single group stage, ready to open its doors with a brand new format. The play-off schedule concludes with four games: those who make it through the round will have a chance to play for the cup with big ears – and replenish their coffers, given the significant revenue – those who are eliminated, on the other hand, will continue their continental adventure in the less prestigious Conference League.

Dynamo Zagreb virtually sealed the deal in the first leg, overwhelming Qarabag Azerbaijanis 3-0, and can travel to faraway Azerbaijan without any particular pressure. The Croatians in this start of the season have done nothing wrong, registering five wins out of five and remaining on full points in the league as well. Coach Sergej Jakirovic could also make a minimum of turnover, since qualification is in the bag: Qarabag should be able to find the way of the goal this time, but having to attack perforce will run the risk of uncovering too much, and for this reason we assume a match of at least one goal on each side in Baku.

On the other hand, a comeback is still possible for Red Star, which surrendered 2-1 to Bodo/Glimt a week ago: Mimovic’s goal a quarter of an hour from the end, with the Serbs down by two goals, keeps the Belgrade lineup alive, but a different performance will be needed to overturn the Norwegians, 90 minutes away from what would be their first Champions League qualification: what is certain is that the Marakana will be full of emotions.

The predictions on the other matches

Qualification is close for Bruno Genesio’s Lille: the Dogues, thanks to goals from David and Zhegrova, settled hostile Slavia Prague (2-0) and in the Czech Republic they can afford to lose even by a goal difference.

The Czechs, compared to a week ago, will not be able to simply contain the opponent and, spurred on by their warm crowd, should at least avoid defeat in a match in which it is highly likely that both will score. Finally, the challenge between Slovan Bratislava and Midtjylland promises balance as in the first leg (1-1) and, given the all too wait-and-see attitude of the two teams, it cannot be ruled out that it will be decided by an episode. The Danes, in our opinion, have a few more chances to snatch qualification.
