Champions League, third preliminary round kicks off: among the most interesting matches is the one between Lille and Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe.
It is, as usual, Champions League’s turn to kick off the third preliminary round, the penultimate before the single group stage, which will make its debut right from this edition. Among the most compelling challenges is surely the one between France’s Lille and Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe, ready to vie for a playoff pass.
The Turkish team, coached by the Portuguese coach, had two hard-fought victories with Lugano in the previous round, winning 4-3 in the first leg and 2-1 in the return. On the other hand, Lille – as of this year coached by Bruno Genesio after the farewell of Paulo Fonseca, now at AC Milan – has not yet played any official matches. We expect a balanced match, in which Mourinho’s men could, however, take advantage of the fact that compared to the transalpines they are far ahead in preparation: both are likely to score. The Danes of Midtjylland are unbeaten in the 5 matches played so far between league and cups and should avoid defeat even with the Hungarians of Ferencvaros. Dinamo Kiev are also likely to make the home factor count: the Ukrainians charmed Partizan Serbs by scoring 9 goals in total between the first leg and the return leg (6-2 and 0-3) and start slightly favored over Rangers, often struggling away from Scotland.
The predictions on the other matches
Sparta Prague has only won since mid-July and in front of their fans should get the better of Romanians FCSB, coming off two tight games with Israelis Maccabi Tel Aviv.
You can also give confidence to Salzburg, which started with a bang in Austria by thrashing Dornbirn in the cup and folding GAK 3-2 on the first day of the league: the Dutch Twente are on notice. Also promising balance are the challenges between Malmo and PAOK – watch out, however, for the Swedes, who have more minutes in their legs than the Greeks – and between Qarabag and Ludogorets.
