Brentford-Fulham prediction: Europe still possible

by Mark

This year in the Premier League, eighth place could be enough to play in Europe next year, thanks to a series of combinations (the expansion of Champions League places, but above all the fact that Newcastle, winner of the League Cup, will in all likelihood finish in the top five, effectively “freeing up” a slot for the Conference League). That’s why the teams in eighth to eleventh place, separated by just four points, are not completely out of the running with two games to go before the end of the season.

The London derby between Brentford and Fulham is therefore set to be a direct clash. The Bees, level with Brighton in eighth place on 55 points, currently look like the main contenders for Conference qualification. Thomas Frank’s side have won their last four games, finding a consistency they have never had this season. In addition to this winning streak, Brentford have not lost in six games, picking up 14 points and scoring 12 goals in total. The Red and Whites are therefore close to their best-ever Premier League finish in a season in which they started with a handicap due to the sale of their top scorer Toney to Saudi Arabia. Cameroonian Mbeumo, who plays further back than him, has not made his absence felt too much, scoring 18 goals and providing seven assists.

Fulham, four points behind Brentford, are still in the race only for mathematical reasons: the Cottagers need a miracle to finish eighth. It is a missed opportunity for the English capital club and one that will certainly fuel regrets. The collapse in the last five games, in which Marco Silva’s men have won only once, against bottom-of-the-table Southampton, was decisive.

The prediction

Brentford believes it can qualify for the Conference League and, given its excellent form, has a good chance of securing another victory – its fifth in a row – against a Fulham side in freefall and struggling with numerous injuries. You can bet on the home side to win in a game with at least three goals in total.
