Athletic Bilbao-Osasuna prediction: home advantage and a desire for revenge

by Mark

Athletic Bilbao went into the break with a smile on their face: in the space of a few days Ernesto Valverde’s team managed to overturn Roma in the Europa League, winning a place in the quarter finals, and return to winning ways in the league (0-1 in Seville), away from home no less, where their last victory had been in January. In doing so, the Basques have increased the gap between themselves and the fifth placed team, Villarreal, and consolidated that fourth place that would allow them to return to the thrill of playing in the Champions League.

The Lions have 52 points, eight more than the Yellow Submarine, who have played one game less. In short, the game seems to be over, also because it is very likely that this season the Liga will send 5 teams and not just 4 to play in the most important continental event thanks to the UEFA ranking. If Valverde and his men manage to do it, it will also be thanks to their impeccable home record: San Mamés is a fortress (8 wins, 5 draws and 1 defeat).

However, Athletic haven’t won in front of their home crowd for over a month. That is, since the resounding 7-1 win over Real Valladolid on February 23rd. The Leones have the opportunity to give their passionate fans something to cheer about again in the match against Osasuna, who have just lost two matches in a row against Getafe and Barcelona. The Pamplona club, among other things, will take the field just three days after the match against the Blaugrana, a game from matchday 27 that was postponed: a match without history at Montjuic, with Vicente Moreno’s team overwhelmed 3-0 by the Catalans. More generally, Osasuna hasn’t won a game in two months: since last November, their only victory in the league has been against Real Sociedad.

The prediction

Athletic’s victory should not be in doubt against an opponent in difficulty like Osasuna, who are also without one of their best players, midfielder Torrò (disqualified). The Basques will thus seek revenge for their elimination last January in the Copa del Rey, when the Pamplona club won 3-2 in Bilbao.
