It is no mystery that Bologna has been planning, for a few years now, to try to write another “fairy tale” like Atalanta’s, drawing inspiration precisely from the Dea’s far-sighted project, which in the space of a decade has transformed itself from a provincial side with the goal of salvation to a big one that even managed to triumph in Europe and is now feared by all.
After achieving a historic Champions League qualification, the Emilians are also showing that they want to continue to be ambitious, trying to return to Europe – even the “minor” one would be welcome – despite painful summer disposals and the loss of their leader Thiago Motta.
Vincenzo Italiano, who arrived in the summer amid general skepticism, is succeeding in the arduous feat of not making his illustrious predecessor regret it, and after twenty-two days the Felsinei are there, with full merit, in the large group of teams fighting for a European placement (with one match still to be made up). Last Saturday Fabbian and De Silvestri gave Italiano another three points in the challenge against Como (2-0), their seventh useful result in a row between league and cups. The Coppa Italia, this being the case, no longer represents a “nuisance” but becomes an intriguing suggestion: after all, Italiano has never snubbed this competition, almost always making it all the way when he was at Fiorentina (in 2023 he played the final against Inter).
Atalanta’s progress is slow
In the quarterfinals, Bologna will take on Atalanta, last year’s finalist, in a dry match. La Dea is coming off a disappointing draw at the Gewiss Stadium with Torino (1-1), and the only games won in 2025 by the Nerazzurri remain those with Sturm Graz in the Champions League and in the league against Como.
Maybe Gian Piero Gasperini’s team is drawing a bit of breath after a couple of months in which it has been on a roll. They play now every three days and it is not easy to recharge the batteries right away: probably also for this reason the club has been among the most active in the market – via Zaniolo, inside Maldini – doing deals even with Bologna itself (in the last days the Rossoblù sold full-back Posch to Dea, replacing him with former AC Milan player Calabria) to make up for the serious injuries of defenders Scalvini and Kossounou.
Both won the previous round: in December, Bologna rifled four goals against Monza (4-0), while Atalanta scored six against a Serie B side, Cesena (6-1).

The Prediction
In the last four previous fixtures Bologna has been a real taboo for Atalanta, which has not beaten the Felsinei in over two years (January 2023). Considering the Dea’s non-sparkling moment, it cannot be ruled out that the Rossoblù will at least manage to avoid defeat in regulation time (in case of a draw, it goes directly to penalties) in a match in which both should find the way of the goal on at least one occasion.
